I put my questions to Dale Bickel of the FCC. He is listed as the contact on the FCC's AM Search page. Here's his answer:

There's no quick and simple formula. It depends on how far away stations on the same channel are located, how big is their 0.1 mV/m contour, and the frequency of the station. The gory details are contained in Section 73.187 of the Commission's Rules and Figures 9, 10, and 11 of Section 73.190, if you are curious.

I took a look at some of these regs and he is absolutely right, there's no quick and simple answer!
