PLEASE just "get it" .... Just say NO to PET STORES! Go to the AKC website and find AKC registered breeders for the breed you're interested in. Or, find national and/or local breed clubs for that breed and make inquiries there. Or, you can attend local dog shows and talk to the handlers and exhibitors to get referrals - or they may even have upcoming litters. Even consider going to the breeds club rescue or other rescues (if you're not partial to a purebred dog per se).
