Free laptops...sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?
Well, you know quite well that companies you deal with offer free items provided you do something in return, (like switch phone carriers, or sign a phone contract) and sometimes you do it.
Why?
Because you would have anyway. It's just that one company got you to do it with them, instead of their competitor, because they threw in something free.
That same idea applies to the legitamite companies that started the referral marketing movement. (sometimes called "viral marketing")
The first legit compay to do it was called Gratis, who came up with freeipods.com It got them in the Fortune 500, and on TV. Their offers were the lifesaver for cashstrapped college students everywhere.
Basically, the idea is that Blockbuster and other major retail companies hire a secondary company to bring them customers, and pay them by the head.
That second company then offers an incentive reward to an individual who signs up to bring along a certain amount of friends who either also want the same incentive reward, or simply want one of the products or offers. (Either way, the first person is credited with bringing them)
When the person gets the amount of people necessary for that reward, they get the item.
I've just been very specific and detailed about the process, but it's far easier in practice, believe me. :)
I've gotten 2 free ipods and a free Athlon 64 desktop this way, and I'm working on a laptop myself.
The one crucial piece of advice I have for you, if you decide to signup with one of these offers is to ONLY go with one of the main legitimate companies doing this. They are Gratis and Offercentric.
Most others are fly-by-night, or haven't been around long enough to prove they aren't scams. (Yes, there are scams out there too) Check the fine print of any site you consider to make sure they are one of these companies.

It's an Offercentric site, and at the moment Offercentric has the best free laptop site around.
In the end, if you have little money (like a student), can wait a month or two and know people who would be interested in the offers provided, or trying to get their own laptop, then it's worth trying.
