Once a quarter or so, I read the list of voy forums on the net to see whether I might find one of interest to me. I happened upon the Florence Warner forum when it appeared to be just three days old. I thought I had never heard of Florence Warner. Then I began to visit the links and do Google searches.

Now I very clearly remember Florence's "Hello" commercials, and, strangely enough, I remember "The Lady Loves the River", but I cannot say now whether it was on the radio or from a friend's record. People are apparently paying quite high prices for her vinyl records.

What exactly is the appeal?

In 1975 or 1976, I went to a party with my boyfriend and his older brother, who was a friend of Florence Warner. I did not know who she was at the time, but she was very classy and exceptionally hospitable to me that evening. When the guest facilities were all occupied, she was gracious enough to allow me into her bedroom area, got me fresh towels, etc. One thing I noticed right away, because I had never seen or heard of this before, was a pair of pink ballet slippers hanging on the wall beside her bed. When Nether Lands was released a year or two later, the memory of those slippers jumped out when I heard Dan singing "on the wall above your bedside". I did not know at the time that Florence had any connection to Dan Fogelberg.

Later, I learned that Dan had written two songs which Florence performed on her debut album. When Florence released her second album, "Another Hot Night", she included two more of Dan's songs, "Love Gone By," which was also on "Nether Lands" and "Drawing Pictures", which Dan had not yet released on one of his own albums. When Dan released it on "Full Circle" 25 years later, it brought back memories and caused me much wondering. One thing I wondered about was what Dan wrote in his booklet accompanying his Portrait project, when he stated that "Dancing Shoes" was written about Maggie, his first wife, a ballerina. We knew that Maggie was a ballerina, but, because of the "facts" we thought we knew, it appeared to those of us who "knew" that "Dancing Shoes" was written about Florence, with whom Dan performed sessions on a dozen or more projects in and around Nashville at the time. Dan performed on one of her albums, and Florence performed on one (or more) of Dan's albums. We just thought what we thought because of our observations, and sometimes, our perception is our reality.

Despite what Dan wrote in his Portrait booklet, in my mind, and in the minds of at least a few other people I know, those dancing shoes belonged to Florence, not Maggie.
