They most likely were members of the nearest Indian tribe, especially the wives of Joseph. You didn't provide details of their residences, so I can't tell which one. If the Bruce family were Catholic or if any of the descendant families were, use the church records local to each generation. Those may reveal more. Additionally, the local BIA records of tribes close by might be very useful. There are many more strategies to use, including those considered to be standard genealogy methods. Use the Library Catalog at http://www.familysearch.org and your local LDS Family History Center to access church and Indian records.
