You will need to be able to extend these family lines back another 50 or 100 years to get a clear picture of their placement geographically in relation to the various Indian towns and settlements. When that is done, there may be clearer conclusions. Contacting the various Melungeon researchers may be of help. There is a great of fuss right now about DNA testing for Indian blood among Melungeons. I hear a lot about it. My anecdotal knowledge about the testing for Indian Blood is this: The DNA seems always to indicate less of a percentage of blood than what is indicated by the genealogy. So, if the Indian blood is very dilute, say, less than 1/8 by the pedigree, it often will not show in DNA testing. Also, I have seen the test show Eastern Asian blood instead of Indian. I can hardly think that there is no Cherokee or other blood in the Melungeon families as well as in the Ramapough Mountain families. It's almost impossible to be resident in those isolated places without there being considerable mixing of European and American Indian blood.
