I just re-watched a made-for TV movie based on Randy Shilts' book _And The Band Played On_. The all-star cast includes Matthew Modine, Alan Alda, Richard Gere, Angelica Houston, Phil Collins, Steve Martin, Ian McKellen, Lily Tomlin--this movie is a given for the Kevin Bacon game--and it's definitely worth a rental if you've never seen it. I just picked up the book from the library, so I'll let you know how it is. I'm rather into epidemiology at the moment, so I'm looking forward to this one.

I recently read an excellent book, "The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time", by Jeffrey D. Sachs, a well-known progressive economist. The book sets out his summary of the bases for world poverty and the approach he supports for a meaningful attack on poverty. It is very informative and perhaps more importantly, hopeful, on what can and must be done to alleviate global poverty. I strongly recommend it. Foreward by Bono!

Let me know what you think

Garey
