Subject: Do Mollies and Patys interbreed?

Do mollies and patys interbreed? My mother in law has a tank that had black mollies, red platys and one grayish molly (male) in the tank. One of them (she thought the red platy because it was the only one that looked pregnant) had babies. All the babies were white/clearish looking. Turns out they grew up to be dalmation mollies. Now it is not possible that the grayish looking mollie was pregnant when she got it as it had been in the tank for months (about 3 or 4) and we believe it to be male. I'm sure we haven't mistaken the sex, we are pretty good at that. Some of the black mollies she has are the "fancy tail"(?I'm not famliar with the correct terminology?) that have the pretty sail fin and flairing tail, others look like plain black mollies. The platys are deep red, some light orange and others have black spots only on the tails.
Has anyone else had experience with them inter-breeding if there are not enough of the opposite sex available for breeding?
