Tiger Barbs

I can't find any info anywhere on how long it takes for a Tiger Barb to grow from hatching to sexual maturity. I can't even find anyone who can tell me the life span of these beauties. Can anyone shed some light on this subject for me? I have recently aquired one adult male, and a little tiny one about the size of my pinky nail. People tell me they should be in schools og 6 or more, but they do fine with just the two of them and a bunch of Serpae Tetras. I have a strong feeling this little Barb I have is female, although it's hard to tell for sure because it is so much smaller than my proven male. I would appreciate any comments. Thank you.
