One of my dwarf gournamis has similar behaviors. I think that he has a swimbladder disease. Fish can contract this in many ways. One way is constipation, try feeding him with foods high in vegetables another way of contracting this disease is from bruising to the abdomen, which can occur if you have handled him in a rough manner, fighting with other fish or breed. If that is the case then it should heal as the bruise goes away. He could have also contracted swim bladder problems from a bacterial infection due to poor water quality. If you suspect the infection, improve water conditions and treat with a broad-spectrum antibiotic.
I hope this helps you...let me know how you fish turns out!
