Subject: tropical fish

I just got a 60 gallon tank about 2 weeks ago. I already have 8 tropical fish init,(mostly small.) I love the fish but am in no way a pro with them. I've never had a tank this big. Is there anyway to tell female from male, and how do you know when a fish is going to have babies? Anyways the tank looks real nice right now, and the fish have plenty of room, I took the advice of a friend and got a big bottle of stress coat. One more question i have is do I need the heater for the fish in the summer.I've always thought they always had to have one, but someone told me they didn't need it in the summer.
