Subject: Blue Gourami

I've had a blue gourami for about two months. I'm pretty sure it's a female. I just bought a smaller male. He is more of a darker blue with faded stripes. I put him with the female and they are biting at eachothers fins. The original female started to turn the same color as the male. The I could see cuts where she was getting bit. I have them separated now. Why are they doing this and what should I do??????? Why are they changing colors?????
