Was by any chance the sick fish a celestial goldfish??? the exact same thing happened to my roommate's fish - he died then we bought an identical one... he then did the same thing. My fantailed goldfish was fine throughout the entire ordeal (as was our algae eater)- before it happened though -the celestial goldfish seemed to have a problem that looked like the swim bladder disease. Thankfully none of the other fish got it!
