Subject: Oranda question re head structure

My orange Oranda is about two years old and had beautiful head structure until about a month ago when it looked like it was growing new structures. Then it looked like it was losing or had scraped part of old structure off and it is just handing there. Now that part is still hanging and the new growth has a red spot in the middle of it.

Is this normal? I read in one book that male lionheads lose pieces of their structures from time to time. Is this true for Orandas? If not does anyone have any suggestions? I have checked water stats and all are normal. One aquarium person here told me to add more salt w hich I did but it doesn't look like it helped. Sometimes he floats and sometimes he lay at the bottom of the tank but otherwise he eats and acts okay.
