Bodies of the mass killing in a southwestern Ontario town have been removed
SHEDDEN, Ont. (CP) - The bodies of eight unidentified men discovered inside several abandoned vehicles were awaiting autopsies Sunday after they were removed overnight from a farmer's field that's now the scene of the worst mass killing in Ontario history.
None of the victims have yet been identified, but they were all known to each other and all came from the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario police Det.-Supt. Ross Bingley told a news conference.
"Obviously, we're not used to having eight people at one homicide scene," Bingley said.
"(In) 27 years of policing, I don't recall that number of people at any one location, so obviously it's fairly significant."
Bingley refused to speculate about the possible cause of death.
The eight men were found dead Saturday inside four vehicles on a tract of southwestern Ontario farmland in Shedden, a tiny farming village of about 800 people southwest of London and south of heavily travelled Highway 401.
The vehicles - a grey Pontiac Grand Prix, a silver Infiniti SUV and a green Chevrolet Silverado tow truck, with a silver Volkswagen Golf attached to the hitch - were taken to provincial police headquarters in Orillia, Ont., north of Toronto.
Police have so far refused to discuss any possible links to organized crime, although surrounding Elgin County has a history of biker activity; several motorcycle clubs have been known to populate the area, including the Loners, the Bandidos and the Hells Angels.
"The Hells are present in Ontario; everybody knows that," Bingley said.
"But as far as me discussing the Hells or anybody else, we're working on this murder case, and we're not talking about the Hells."
Police have been stopping cars to ask drivers what they have seen.
On Saturday, an aerial view showed the vehicles parked within 200 metres of each other, the bodies still inside. One body was clearly visible, lying curled on its side in the trunk of the SUV. Photos of the body were on the front pages of several Canadian newspapers Sunday.
The SUV was found in a field about 20 metres off a dirt road. About 100 metres away, the tow truck bearing a Superior Towing logo on the side was found parked on the shoulder, the Volkswagen hooked to the back.
The owner of a Superior Towing in the Toronto area denied Saturday that the truck was part of his fleet.
Police escorted members of the media beyond the barricades for a closer look at the area where the cars were found, but there was little left to see.
"We've never had anything like (this), to the best of my knowledge, in Ontario," said police Const. Doug Graham.
The scene will remain off-limits for at least another several days as investigators continue their search for clues - "clothing, identification, any evidence that may help us ascertain who they are," he added.
"We wouldn't want the farm owner to encounter (evidence), or anyone from the public," Graham said. "We want to gather any other evidence and want to make sure there are not other victims we haven't found yet."
It's not the first time that the hallmarks of violent crime have been discovered in the isolated area.
In separate incidents in 1994 and 1998, the bodies of a man and a woman were found dumped in county fields. Both had been beaten to death and neither of the murders were ever solved.
In October 1999, there was a shootout on Highway 401, apparently the result of a rift inside one of the gangs.
But residents whose homes border the crime scene said they were unaware of any biker activity, although most found it too unbelievable that such a large-scale killing could have been at the hands of anyone they knew.
Mayor James McIntyre said police have assured the village's 800 residents they were not in any danger.
Darlene Deslandes, who has lived in the area all her life and had a full view of the vehicles from her back window, called the murder scene scary and wildly out of character.
"It's quiet and calm, nothing ever happens here," Deslandes said.
"If they are from around this area, it would be scarier than if it's someone from far away."
Brett Potter, 43, who has lived in the village for a decade, said he was looking for answers.
"It's not something we're used to in this neighbourhood. It's a quiet area," Potter said.
"It would be nice to know what happened, what brought it about."

Bikie gangs...
You live by the sword you die by the sword.
At least they had to stop manufacturing speed long enough to go out and kill a bunch of rival gang members.

Yeah, I read about it this morning in the paper as well. You know, maybe I'm watching too much Sopranos, but the first thing I thought was that it sounded like a mob hit. I really hope they find who did this. Dang...

Yeah, I guess it's not such a local story when I saw it on CNN.
The first thing i thought of too, was the mafia and I was thinking how you never think it really happens, but I guess it does. The Hells Angels and the Mafia are pretty much the samething.
All that they are saying right now is that they are all males and they all knew eachother.
The most grumsome thing is I didn't post the pic here, but in all the papers they had an aerial wiew of one of the guys dead in the trunk.
I'll keep it posted, this one is straight outta of a great crime story.

The mafia is much slicker than this and would have actually disposed of the bodies.
And bikers don't drive Volkswagon Golfs.
I'd say it's a seriel killer. They like to be obvious like that.
But it does remind me of that movie "Things to do when you're dead in Chicago" where they keep threatening to shoot each other up the ass, because it takes 20 minutes to die this way!
Did they say how they died? Were they also beaten to death?

Thet're doing the autopsies today, so they haven't said how they died yet. They haven't even released the names yet and supposedly there are 4 reported missing guys on Friday.

The latest...
TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian police charged five people on Monday after the worst mass murder in Ontario's history and said the killings were likely the result of an internal dispute of a biker gang.
The eight bodies were found on Saturday on a farm outside Shedden, Ontario, a sleepy town roughly midway between Toronto and Detroit.
Police said the victims were all either full members or associates of the Bandidos gang. They had been shot dead.
Police have charged five people, including one local Bandidos gang member, with first-degree murder.
Speculation that the deaths were gang-related increased on Sunday after police raided the nearby home of the Bandidos member later arrested. However, the police dismissed early speculation that the deaths were part of a dispute with the rival Hells Angels gang.
"This is an isolated incident with ties to the Bandidos," Ontario Provincial Police superintendent Ross Bingley told a news conference in nearby London, Ontario.
"We are confident that the public safety for area residents has not been compromised."
One officer suggested the crime could have stemmed from an "internal cleansing" of the gang.
The case shocked the rural Ontario region where the bodies were found and fuelled fears about biker turf wars and related drug trade in a country with a relatively low crime rate.
The Hells Angels issued a statement on its Web site, distancing themselves from the murders.
Police said they were still investigating and suggested the men may not have been killed where they had been found. They would not speculate whether there might be more arrests.
They would not say if the victims had been held captive before they were killed, but noted that the charge of first-degree murder implies either deliberate planning or forceful confinement.

Well, its a good thing they figured it out so quickly. And, that the community doesn't seem to be in danger with some sort of crazed mass murderer running loose. What a horrible crime.
