I saw that on there also. I didn't know that was her moniker's origin, either. She (the goddess) sounds like a total badass.

And Leo - I was thinking of a few of them for possible middle names for potential kids. My wife and I already have first names picked out (she picked the boy's name, I picked the girl's).

As I'm sure you know 23, take care when choosing a deity name for your children. Going with "what sounds nice" isn't suggested.

Iymlad - I was more interested in the meaning that the sound.

But right now, I'm liking Freya for a girl and Loki for a boy (I know Loki's rep, but I like him anyway).

I miss that, too.

And I know that he's mischevious, but he's many other things. He's brilliant, clever, resourceful and doesn't give a damn about authority. All of which I think are handy traits to have in a person (although, I'm sure they'll be difficult in a child).

I'm a fan of all the trickster/messenger gods. The liasons between the mortal and the immortal plane tend to be the most interesting. Prometheus/Coyote/Hermes/Raven/Loki/Anansi/Eris/Kokopelli/etc.

Jonah for a boy, Natasha for a girl.

I have always loved the name Natasha for a girl. Sounds classic to me.

I wasn't allowed to name my son - though hey yeah. I named him after 23...so your child should be Natasha Lump. LOL! j/k

If I hit the lottery tomorrow (which is the ONLY way I'd have more children), I'd name my daughter Millicent (no, I'm not kidding) and my boy William (family tradition tossed aside the last 2 generations).

Freakonomics has a great chapter on naming children - and 23 those would both be great names according to that book! :)

You'd actually have to read it because I know I couldn't explain it to you well. I gave it to my boss to read, or I'd just send it to you.

Basically, names don't have anything to do with how successful you can be (duh, right?). In fact, the chapter follows 2 sons, one named Winner (who ends up in prison) and one named Loser (who becomes extremely successful). Anyhow, the importance in names are not actually the names themselves...but the trends. Successful people name have their own fads and it takes about 15 years for the non-successful people to catch the fad. The Kaitlyn pre-80s was likely born to successful people and then likely also successful. Then the fad caught on and Kaitlyn became a "common" name in more ways than 1. When I was born (back when they invented the train), Jessica was the #1 name for almost 10 years. It was common when I got it and didn't indicate whether or not I'd be successful. However, a Jessica that's about 15 years older than me probably was successful.

I don't know - you'd have to read it - it's hard to explain.

Ok with the lumpy...but if it's a boy it MUST be LUMPS.

I disagree on two fronts. :)

(1) I think that names can and do affect the fate of a person. So many little things relate back to ones name ... even if we only consider the impacts of first impressions. But on a more subtle level, there is an aura around a name that is comprised of how it has been used in the past. For example, I love the name Lucifer for it's meaning and history, yet there is so much baggage attached to it (although unwarrented - topic for another day) that it simply would not be wise to give it to a child under most circumstances.

(2) Your example of fad names, then and now. One thing came to mind relating to generalizations based on statistics. I am a bit put off by the attachment of the "why" to the "what". For example, those parents that think outside the box for their children's names may tend to be more free thinkers in general. Statistically, a "River Phoenix" would likely grown up in a significantly different environment and under different influences than a "John Smith".
