RON,

Starter has bushing /dampners to chain drive..... Is yours a 86 or 87 by chance?

Starter can be removed to inspect the rubber dampners but if its a 86 I would suspect a starter chain failure......

Was the battery run down?
What happened with the 86 & early 87 was the Igniter (ignition module) set the spark to fire too late (retarded timing)and with a weak battery would sometimes result in a backfire, this would put undue strain on the starter chain and break the chain (big $$$s to repair) hopefull your is not the case.

Where are you located?
