The speedo is known to have about a 10% error in the actual speed. However the Odo is usually "spot-on". If you change the gear in the sending unit, it will get you closer to the actual speed, but then mess up the odometer reading. Most just mentally compensate for the speed error. Also, the replacement gear is not quite right and will cause early failure of the sending unit. In my opinion, It just ain't worth it. I use a GPS for my actual speed.
