Steve,

I sent you and Gary a note as soon as I stumbled home though it's clear it didn't reach you in time.

The event started well- hot in fact. We hit the mid 80's on Tuesday and about mid-day on Wednesday the temp dropped. It stayed low and then Thursday mid-afternoon the rain began. Rain never let up and neither did the temps. Sometime early Friday morning, long before light we started having to evacuate men showing signs of hypothermia. The rain continued and the majority of the troops were unable to sleep and stayed awake stoking fires. I would wager that virtually everything anyone owned was saturated. We were then beginning the lower elevations of the loop and knew from past experience that the creeks would be moving fast and pretty deep. Even if we did march on Friday, Tom and I figured that few would make it through another night of temps in the low 40's and heavy rain. The boys were totally spent, having slept little, and socks and shoes were wet too. One EMT advised that pruned up as their feet were, the flesh would come right off them with a day of marching.

Tom and I hated like hell to pull the plug, but seeing as we had pulled some out already and being advised that many more would follow, the best course of action was to get us all out.

I regret terribly that you and the professor came down for naught. Trust me, we all wanted to see you there Saturday morning.

Cordially,

Fred
