LAWRENCEBURG, IN (FOX19) -
An FBI agent served a grand jury subpoena on the mayor of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and other city leaders seeking documents related to loans and grants awarded between 2007 and the present, FOX19's investigative team confirms.
Holding a copy of the subpoena, first term Lawrenceburg City Councilman Mike Lawrence tells FOX19 the city council resident and town treasurer were also served.
Lawrence welcomes the federal investigation saying he "thought it was illegal" the way Lawrenceburg leaders "awarded millions and millions of dollars" in the past without a city ordinance allowing them to do it and without any guidelines, he said.
The records the grand jury seeks must be delivered to the federal courthouse in Indianapolis by 9 a.m. on Jan. 24.
Lawrence says it's his understanding an Indiana State Police investigator and IRS investigator accompanied the FBI agent when he delivered the subpoena last Thursday.
Lawrenceburg City Council will meet in special session at the City Building tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in what Lawrence says was originally supposed to be a meeting about awarding more grants. But he says he plans to "put the brakes on" and hopes other city council members will, as well, in light of the federal investigation.
FOX19 also called Mayor Dennis Carr for comment. A woman who answered the phone said he was unavailable but that someone from the mayor's office would likely get back with us.
