Subject: Islam and Globalisation lecture - Mon 27th Feb from 12-2pm

There is a brilliant historian of Islam coming to speak in Trinity on Monday (27th Feb). Professor Barbara Metcalf (University of Michigan) is primarily a historian of Muslim India, but she has also written 'Making Muslim Space in North America and Europe'.

Her talk - entitled "Islam and Globalization" promises to be very interesting. It is being held at 12 o'clock on Monday, on the sixth floor of the arts block, in the IIIS seminar room (you can ask for directions when you get up there) .

There will be a talk for one hour, followed by an hour of questions and discussion from the floor. To date, the talks have been poorly advertised, so it is an amazing opportunity to hear a respected historian, in an intimate environment, and to question her afterwards.

I hope to see some of you there,

Abie

that was a really informative talk. thanks for the notification.

hopefully, this coming april, I plan to invite a speaker who'll do something similar to what dr. metcalf did, although on the topic of Islam and violence and with a special emphasis on the traditional perspective (the perspective ahmed madani shared according to metcalf's speech).

again, great talk. hope to attend to more like it in the future.

Hi Susan,

I read your message. I would be happy to talk to you regarding your research topic, although I have only been in Ireland for only around 6 months.

Subject: the water cycle...

Author:

salaam all..have you guys ever think of the water that we use everyday? it seems that there's so many water in the world that we always take it for granted and always waste it(maybe, this is only done by some people, not all)..

have we ever wonder where the water comes from? yes, rain.. but where the rain comes from? clouds..yes..what forms the clouds? water from earth..yes..so, the water that we use everyday is actually being recycled and reuse again and again..who introduced this concept of water cycle that we believe in today?

In 1580, Bernard Palissy was the first man to describe this phenomena. He described how water evaporates from the oceans and cools to form clouds. The clouds move inland where they rise, condense and falls as rain. This water gathers as lakes and streams and flows back to the ocean in a continuous cycle.

In the 7th century B.C, Thales of Melitus believed that surface spray of the oceans was picked up by the wind and carried inland to fall as rain. In earlier times, people did not know the source of underground water. They thought the water of the oceans, under the effect of winds, was thrust towards the interior of the continents. They also believe that the water returned by a secret passage, or the Great Abyss. this passage is connected to the oceans, and has been called the 'Tartarus', since Plato's time. Even Descartes, a great thinker of the 18th century, subscribed to this view.

Till 19th century, Aristotle's theory was prevalent. According to this theory, water was condensed in cool mountain caverns and formed underground lakes that fed springs. Today, we know that the rainwater that seeps into cracks of the ground is responsible for this.

Hmm...why don't we refer to the holy Quran? The water cycle is actually described in the following verses:

"Sees thou not that Allah sends down rain from the sky, and leads it through springs in the earth? then He causes to grow, therewith, produce of various colours"
The holy Quran 39: 21

"He sends down rain from the sky and with it gives life to the earth after it is dead: Verily in that are signs for those who are wise"
The holy Quran 30: 24

"and We send down water from the sky according to measure, and We cause it to soak in the soil; and We certainly able to drain it off (with ease)"
The holy Quran 23: 18

Hope this would make us ponder upon the Creator, who makes everything in this world, for us to use. And how do we thank Him? Ask ourself...

salaam..

Congrats on the new discussion board of MSA. Just for us to ponder upon:

Two hungry wolves let loose amongst sheep will not cause more harm to them than a person's craving after wealth and status will do to his religion- (Ahmad)

what i understand from this hadith is that what ever u do u have to put islam first and not wealth or status.
because of wealth people fight with each other, because of status people tend to be jealouse with one another.
but people unite because of religion.

Let it be a reminder to us.
Wassalam.
