Subject: FG Serial Costume Poll

To start this one off, I will make it simple; the costumes the women had on are my favorites! Heh! Yes, the High Priest's costume was well-made.

Very informative info/opinions were rendered by Commander Rick in recent FG Trilogy Poll. I spaceographed Sergeant Tim lately, and will await his comments. Will render mine early next week some time. (Kudos to Commander Rick for very thoughtful write up. Trying to decide on favorites can be tough.)

For now, a brief one re costumes here. Subjective opinions here from me. OK...for sure, top score to the womens outfits, just about all, heh, heh. Now, in menswear, hmmm, I'll say Mings robe, in '36 and Mars, also his full dress uniform in CTU, Vultan's garb and his hawkmen of course, Yes, the High Priest also, Thun had a costume of interest, Barin and Roman sword and sandals look of Mings guards were of interest, moreso better to me than Robin Hood like garb from CTU Barin.

Well, guess makeup made this, but the claymen in Mars looked good...but outfits were plain. Queen Fria had a nice hairdo, and looked regal, as did Queen Azura. I liked Dale's Maid Marion like updated look in '40s CTU. Officer Torch (me) in my full armor looked good, also nephew Capt Torch and his men, including headgear. Who can forget those nice Martian wing helmets by leaders of Azura's stratosled death squad. How could I forget those gockos and orangopoid. Surely I might have left some out...perhaps Sgt Tim can add more also. As for demerits, I might choose so-called disguise used by Zarkov looking like a monk, a simple outfit given to him by Karm to leave the lab in CTU. Demerits also for sharkmen...bathing caps.

The women's costumes top my list as well, especially the Dale Arden attire in FG '36. Her costume in Trip to Mars was more conservative, due I suppose to the Hays office censorship of the day. Queen Azura of Mars looked fantastic in the second serial (especially in contrast to the clay people, heh).

King Vultan's costume tops my menswear list, it was sci-fi comic strip fantasy vividly brought to life. Ming's robe in FG '36 and Trip to Mars gave him the right mix of authority and menace.

I'll never forget the first time I saw Officer Torch in FG '36, an imposing armored figure who quickly took command of the crew of the just-arrived Rocketship from Earth.

I recently read somewhere that Richard Alexander, Prince Barin from FG '36 and Trip to Mars, designed a number of costumes in the Flash Gordon serials! I don't know if this is an apocryphal story, or is in fact accurate.

Of course the biggest lingering mystery is what would Sergeant Tim have worn if he actually appeared in the serials. Enlisted man chic, I would surmise.

Sergeant Tim
