Subject: The Destroying Ray

Chapter 5 of Flash Gordon '36 contains a number of significant and memorable events.

We see Prince Barin for the first time, as he quietly enters Dr Zarkov's laboratory. His first words are "You are concerned about your friends?"

"I am Prince Barin, real ruler of Mongo."

The initial images of Vultan's flying Hawkmen have an almost poetic beauty, thanks in large part to the accompanying soundtrack.

Flash: "Thun, what are they?"
Aura: "King Vultan's Hawkmen."

We also are introduced to the boisterous King Vultan, who obviously has an eye for Dale Arden. Orso makes his debut in this chapter as well.

Vultan: "Perhaps you will like my friend Orso."

The Destroying Ray also has its opening line of dialogue delivered by none other than Officer Torch (speaking to Ming). Is it the only FG chapter with that distinction?

(Additional memo to Officer Torch and Majesty Ming; it was Barin who said that real ruler of Mongo line, not Sergeant Tim or Sergeant Time! Neither of us are anxious for Gocko shovel duty!)

Aah yes...the boisterous King Vultan, my favorite, most colorful character in the serial.

You know, we never did find how Barin got up into the lab and snoop around palace areas. He must be aware of passages we are not aware of...thanks for the memory jog...we will search again for hidden passages. It might be like the underground abode of your earth's Phantom of the Opera!

Thank you... Thank you for kudos on opening lines of dialogue, I do have a few gems in fact sprinkled throughout the serial.

I will try to temper Ming's anger re the Sgt.Tim/Time issue. (Frankly, I don't even recall the details.) But he was angry, so much that he engraved BOTH your names on a couple shovels to cover either. Apparently, there are questions why you seem to dwell on this subject often, as though you feel guilty or something!?

The High Priest is waiting in the wings!

Not so much guilt as a fondness for the Gocko species perhaps, or more likely an admiration for actor Glenn Strange, later of Universal's House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula, not to mention his stint as Sam the bartender on Gunsmoke.

But I am not such a Gocko fan that I would volunteer for shovel duty, although I cannot speak for Sgt Time on the issue. I would wish that an "e" be added to the name engraved on my personal shovel, thereby more fun for Sgt Time!

what? WHAT? What is the meaning of this? Are you...are you actually saying that the Sacred Dragon (aks gocko to some) is in fact an actor in a costume? Blasphemy.

It is my duty, as much as I would prefer not, to pass this information onto Emperor Ming. The High Priest, as Commander Rick indicates, is waiting in the wings. You can in fact see him at his usual post beside the sacred gong in the Mingograph above.

I suspect BOTH of you will use the inscribed shovels, and your response to this and behavior in the dwelling, with the High Priest checking on you thru the secret peephole, will determine your fate. What have you to say.

I can say with certainly that the Sacred Dragon aka the Gocko is no actor!

The confusion arose from "television" signals broadcast from Earth long ago and just now received and unscrambled in Zarkov's laboratory, a place kindly provided by our Emperor.

I blame the entire affair on Sergeant Time, who may once again be in fugitive status in chilly Frigia.

All right, I will remain silent for now, since your comment re Sgt. Time and Frigia has consistency from previous posts...but beware, do not cross me Sgt. Tim. I have my sources, along with Commander Rick and the High Priest. For now, both of the engraved shovels will remain, just in case, per our Emperor who also belted out a "heh."
Sleep well.
