In the '36 serial characters, we saw a lustful Princess Aura, and a delicate blossom in young Dale Arden. Both attractive in their own way. Flash Gordon favored Dale, despite being saved numerous times by Princess Aura.
I guess guys viewing the serials had mixed opinions, perhaps depending on their own age. Many favored Dale; I liked 'em both, but recall flip flopping.
The Dale Arden character became more business like in 1938, Mars, no longer the delicate flower. Queen Azura was imperious. (We also had the Hays office.)
In FGCTU, I thought Carol Hughes was attractive as Dale with a balance of charm/smarts. Sonja was also good, in a bad kind of way. Casting was different for Aura...no longer a lusting type.
So, the bottom line. Well, I'm flip flopping, still! That's ok, makes it fun and interesting. But if pressed now to pick one only...I'd say Jean Rogers as Dale Arden as my number 1 (in 1936 serial). But this could change....tomorrow it could be Priscilla Lawson as Princess Aura from same serial.

Of the two choices given I would go with (A) the lustful Princess Aura of Flash Gordon '36, as played by Priscilla Lawson. She is attractive and a Princess to boot, but consider the fact that if you were to marry her who your father-in-law would be! Which, errrr (looks nervously over my shoulder) is a good thing for those of us in the Empire...
But for me the loveliest of all the FG serial ladies is Dale Arden as portrayed by Jean Rogers in Flash Gordon '36.

This is potentially humorous, funny material. I will give it some thought and think about ..eg family gatherings, etc. I can see huge arguments or more by Barin saying to Ming...."You murderer" etc.
On the Aura issue vs Dale, something I forgot earlier... they could be biologically different, like in TV series V or countless others. In FG 1980, their blood is a different color, and they seem to deflate when they expire. Interplanetary relationships?...well, there's Spock's parents eg. So who knows. But Aura always had to be a spitfire type and seemingly lusty...she was raised around guns, fights, weaponry, monsters, and then some. Spoiled too I'd imagine being the emperor's daughter. Doubtful she had cute tea parties as a kid...she grew up with tough "stuff" around. Tomboyish when young maybe, growing into a lusty, headstrong woman... cunning, intelligent. (I can't see her domestically inclined though.) But, maybe to FG, an alien nevertheless with an evil father, perhaps not toward her, but plenty of others. (Note: in the 1980 FG flick, Ming was not always that kind to daughter Aura...he even had his secret police torment her.)

In FGCTU, Aura was domesticated. Even though a different actress played her to meet the look of Raymond's changing strip, the girl was not like the first version of Aura we got to know.

Commander Rick...owing to your trivia "stuff" to trap me sometimes, I owe you a couple of trivia zingers perhaps....one for that helmet thing last month and this Dale-Aura business now. Heh...let's try these out...but I think you may get them. Take your time if necessary.
1)Can you supply any details about where (if anywhere)in the FG trilogy there might have been a clip from a Universal silent called "The Midnight Sun." Some details.
2)Is there any mention in the Trilogy equating Ming to Hitler, not in those words but in a general idea sense. If so, where and what. A few details.
Heh, heh HEH HEH (With all due respect)

Re: How do you like Princess Aura? -- Rick, 02:00:22 06/05/10 Sat [1]
1.) Stock footage of Laura La Plante from 'The Midnight Sun' was edited in for the banquet scenes in Vultan's palace, when Dale and Aura are seated with him. That is located in FG 36. I think it's chapter 7.
2.) In FGCTU, Ch 1, General Lupi protests to Ming: "Your Majesty, I demand to know why I and the thousands of others with me, are being held prisoners in your filthy concentration camps."
One of the writers definitely was depicting Ming to Hitler, when he wrote this line.

Yeah, you got 'em. I will apparently have to dig deeper into the Mongo archives and sacred writings for still more challenging trivia in an attempt to trap you, with all due respect of course. Best regards from Officer Torch.

Re: Ming's reply -- Rick, 19:36:34 06/05/10 Sat [1]
"You plotted with your Queen Fria to refuse my demands. You meet the same fate as all those who oppose me." (Ming's reply to General Lupi in the pit room.)
