I must freshen up re-watching my beloved favorite serials, but I'll more or less hold to my previous thoughts in ranking the FG serials:

A) 1936 Best one, the first, introduced us to the characters, had many kingdoms, all sorts of characters, monsters, costumes, adventure, lots of sword fights, fun stuff (hey, look at all the kiddin' around we do having some laughs about Vultan's shadow puppet shows, Orso, etc.) and last but not least, the Dale and Aura of the day, along with the love triangles. Hey, let's face it, many of us were adolescent kids back then.

C) 1940s CTU, for me anyway, a very close second. Great music, non-stop action and adventure, fast moving, lots of air/spaceship attacks & battles, nasty weapons of all kinds, Ming at his peak in my opinion, commanding, ruthless as ever, fights of all kinds, updated and with costumes seemingly more appropriate. Likely, real world WW2 presented some influence.

B) 1938s Mars, last but not least--I enjoyed them all, but have to rank this third, relatively speaking. Too much Forest Kingdom/fluff for me. But, good story, very coherent with the nitron lamp. Interesting gadgets..light bridge, Martian wings, Stratosleds, subway, sparking labs. Good music, lots from Bride of Frankenstein I think. Interesting special effects/concepts-Clay People, Ming's fire walk.

Flash Gordon (1936) is my fave. Timeless and imaginative, brimming with fast-paced action and entertainment, it's like a comic book come to life. And what a cast of supporting characters, including King Vultan, Prince Thun and King Kala. I would surmise that FG 36 is the best fantasy/science fiction serial ever made, although I have certainly not seen all of them.

As for numbers two and three on my list, I will call it a draw between Trip to Mars and Conquers the Universe.

I prefer Jean Rogers as Dale Arden in Trip to Mars to Carol Hughes in Conquers the Universe, although both ladies do a fine job.

Trip to Mars has Queen Azura, the Clay People and the amazing array of gadgets cited by Officer Torch. Conquers the Universe has the best dialogue of all three serials, plus an influential Star Wars-like musical score, and is generally the most sophisticated entry in the trilogy.

But really, I would give anyone the same advice that Flash Gordon stalwarts Commander Rick, Officer Torch and Prince Barin gave me about this time last year...watch all three!
