Quiz Answers, Comments

1. The High Priest, specifically the 2nd (crafty) one, a part nicely played by Ted Lorch.

2. Barin said Ming killed his father.

3. Flash tells Ming (at first meeting in palace) as Ming lusts for Dale. Soon, Flash is thrown into arena to battle monkey men.

4. The huge idol, referred to as the oracle, surrounded by dancing women, was from a (somewhat bizarre)1930 musical, by Fox Film Corp called Just Imagine. Zarkov's rocket was also more or less from that movie, and some other sets. (Some of the futuristic art deco type building sets were later evident in Universal's 1939 Buck Rogers.)The smaller idol later seen eg in the wedding ceremony was of Amon-Ra from Universal's 1932 "The Mummy."

5. False. It's easy to get tripped up on this (ask me how I know) perhaps because of the similarity of the costumes, and they sometimes look even more similar in b&w for some reason. But, it's Vultan who was doing the choking.

6. False... Thun saved Flash using a rifle type ray gun.

7. You can see her double while they (Tigron trainer and Aura) are in the tunnel looking where Barin hid Dale. The tigron picks up the scent from Dale's sandle given to the trainer earlier by Aura. Watch Aura after the tigron leaves the trainer.

8. Metropolis, 1927 silent film by Fritz Lang.

9. Because in all the excitement, Zarkov forgot to turn on the oxygen.

10. Bronson Canyon, a popular site for filming such fare, and especially Westerns. (I believe Commander Rick had some pictures posted of the area.)

11. My understanding lab was from set of 1936s The Invisible Ray.

12. My understanding lab machinery by Kenneth Strickfadden, and such equipment can also be seen in Universal movies such as Frankenstein and others.

13. Well...this could be one of those gray area ones...but yeah, I guess we could include a)Orso, b), c), and....well, dunno about d)...let's face it, Vultan feasts. OK..open for debate, or we'll void the question, and I'll eat crow.

14. At the Tournament of Death where Flash swordfights a hooded Barin....during the excuse segment I believe, after Flash removes Barin's hood, is when Barin reveals his love for Princess Aura.

15. Zona is an attractive woman, a subject of King Kala in the water kingdom. She is with Dale while Flash is nearly drowned in a tank, and later has a scuffle of sorts as I recall with Dale.

16. Well, there is one sword, and it belongs to Thun, until Flash gets ahold of it. Curiously, though, during the fight, Thun has his left hand on his scabbord, or sheath, nearly the whole time! (Geez..talk about trivia.)

17. a)Dale Arden b)likely a Ford Tri-Motor

18. True. I understand he was a grandson to Arthur Middleton.

19. We see him around the time Flash does battle with the orangopoid.

20. We see Thun and his lionmen attack Ming's palace throne room near the end of the serial.

21. Yeah...he's choking me... Officer Torch.

22. My understanding is that Jean Roger's hair was dyed blond to have the character Dale Arden look closer to the popular Jean Harlow.

23. b) Ming ship, with me (Officer Torch) and my two soldiers (buckethead twins)fire on the lizards, then collect the earth people for delivery to Ming.

24. Well, maybe I eat crow again. It's NOT a) or c) Ok...here's the story. The high priest gives Aura 2 kinds of pills to spike wine..one type of pill for making Flash go into a deep sleep, another to make him forget when he awakens. The drugged wine is brought to him by a guard on Aura's order, and it has the desired effect, for awhile anyway. In the Chapter 10 Foreward, we read that he was drugged with the..and I quote the quote..."drops of forgetfulness." We also hear this a few times in the dialog, but if you listen closely, sometime the word drops...said by Barin, sounds like draughts....as in a beverage. Of course, those pills would result in a drugged beverage. Ahh...dunno..any comments, let's have 'em.

25. a) Dale didn't seem to have a scratch on her...so I'd say False. The Tigron in the serial looks like a regular tiger..note however, that in the comics, the Tigrons have horns. In the serial, the Tigron has no horn. It is released by the mistress, or trainer, NOT on Ming's order, but on Princess Aura's order. The Tigron apparently picked up on the scent from Dale's sandle or shoe presented to it earlier.

As always, comments, debate, questions, corrections, encouraged. Will discuss more later on. Thank you, and hope perhaps you've enjoyed this, and hope for more dialog. Heh, heh.

I am amazed and gratified at the magnificent response of Tim to the fiendish quiz posted by that crafty Officer Torch. Officer Torch may appear at times to be assisting our compatriots on this site but everything that transpires here is immediately communicated by Officer Torch to our sworn enemy, Emperor Ming.

I nominate Tim to the inner sanctum of FG followers, a very select and proven group of knowledgeable colleagues of our interplanetary hero. Let it be noted here that I myself was first admitted into this group only a short time ago after following Flash for over fifty years, being first exposed to our leader on Buster Crabbe's own TV show in 1952. It has taken me all these years of study to dare to present myself for combat on this site.

Congratulations once again to Tim! May the Light Bridge never fail to support you in your adventures!

The Answers:

1.) He's referring to the High Priest

2.) Barin's father was killed by Ming when he was a child.

3.) Flash said this to Ming when they first met in the throne room in CH 1.

4.) The large idol and its erotically-attributed dancers was built for the FOX film, 'Just Imagine' (1930) and used as stock footage in the 1936 serial. Re-used in the 1940 serial. The smaller idol was a set prop from 'The Mummy' (1932).

5.) False. Vultan strangled the High Priest and then stopped.

6.) False. It was Prince Thun who stopped the Gocko.

7.) CH 12 and the 13 recap sequence in the catacombs with the tame tiger who played the Tigron. Also, stock shots of the tiger were culled most likely from 'Tarzan the Tiger' (1929).

8.) The set prop was built for the film 'Metropolis' (1927).

9.) Lack of oxygen due to Zarkov's failure to turn the oxygen supply on, as they are passing through the Death Zone, as they are leaving the Earth.

10.) The location shots of the tunnel were shot at Bronson Canyon and in one of the caves. I know the place well.

11.) The interior set was built for 'The Invisible Ray' (1936).

12.) Ken Strickfadden, one of Universal's electricians. Seen in 'Frankenstein' (1931) and 'Bride of Frankenstein' (1935) as well as in other horror films.

13.) All apply to our fine-feathered friend.

14.) CH 8 after Flash defeats him in the tournament as they are waiting for Flash to fight the Orangupoid.

15.) Zona is one of King Kala's handmaidens and henchwomen. She was involved with Dale in most cases, like when she was holding her captive to watch Flash fight the Octosac. She was later put out of commission by Aura, in a fight as the palace was about to be flooded.

16.) Thun was holding onto his scabbard and using the sword to lunge until Flash took it away and beat him in the fight and they became allies.

17.) Dale of course, so Flash could meet her!

18.) True. He was the grandson of Arthur Middleton and grandfather to Burr Middleton, whom I know.

19.) You see him first appear in CH 8.

20.) Yes, in CH 13 to combat Ming.

21.) Strangulation to Torch!

22.) Dyed blonde as the film studios would use blonde as a purity in associating with a hero in male and female actors, just as actors with dark hair were cast as heavies. Also, the blonde was a carry-over from Jean Harlow, who was a big movie actress at the time.

23.) A: the Ming ship kills them with the ray.

24.) First, the pills to drug Flash and Barin as they have a victory drink (that is spiked) and they fall asleep. Then, the Drops of Forgetfullnes were administered to a semi-conscious Flash by Aura and the High Priest as they were about to enter the Tunnel of Terror, so Aura could take Flash for herself. The High Priest, in fear of being executed for exposing the secret of how to slay the Orangupoid to Aura, sounds the Sacred Gong and the Fire Dragon wakes up when news breaks out Barin and party are coming.

25.) The Tigron was given one of Dale's sandals by its Mistress and picked up her scent in the catacombs and found her. This was arranged by Aura with the Tigron's Mistress in private. The animal was sans a horn and by the time it could do anything serious, Flash had contained and killed it as "The Prowling Monster" cue can be heard from TWOL (1935). Dale: "Flash, you killed him!"

Rick (who is now ready for the Healing Vapors!), but as promised, I did it.
