Subject: Bombay Mail...Mini Review

A Flash Gordon compatriot and friend sent me "Bombay Mail" as a gift. It's apparently available in VHS at nostalgia outfits; perhaps elsewhere.
This 1934 Universal oldie, along with Bride of Frankenstein, and a CD of Les Preludes will likely provide much in the way of Flash Gordon serial type music sought after by fans. I digress. If you like classic Flash Gordon serials, chances are you will like this title for its music, though much tends to be in the earlier and mid sections of the movie. Now a bonus--if you like crack on-time steam passenger trains from yesteryear, fast paced murder mysteries, the board game Clue, Charlie Chan type movies, and foreign intrigue, Bombay Mail is a win win title. Pay attention when viewing, or watch it again (no problem--it seems to get better with time).
Admittedly, I was mesmerized with the music on the 1st viewing, and paid less attention to the story. A second pass was necessary for me. The whodunnit was indeed fast paced, with an interesting cast of characters, situations, and suspects. Inspector Dyke (Edmund Lowe) was superb, and I found John Davidson (1) interesting as Xavier, and Brandon Hurst as Pundit Chundra. Still, a bit tough to follow, even after a couple of cups of joe, but things come together at the end with the familiar gathering of the suspects.
I enjoyed the acting, sets, interesting characters, AND Roemheld's music. Seems other mysteries and shows might have borrowed from this early work, but that's beyond scope of this mini review. Hope I've helped some.
Will give it a thumbs up.
