Subject: COMMUNITY CALL TO ACTION! - ROCKAWAY LIFEGUARD POLICIES

We need your help!
Call 311

ROCKAWAY SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED BY OUR CITY OFFICIALS!

Community Board 14’s subcommittee that is focused on the DP&R’s Lifeguard recruitment/training and deployment throughout the city recently met. DP&L has done little over the last three years to address numerous problems and questionable practices. Letters and recommendation sent from CB14 to Deputy Commissioner Kavanagh and Commissioner Benepe went unanswered for well over a year.

We are now entering a new testing season for lifeguards. If allowed, DP&R will, once again use an antiquated facility and test candidates behind closed doors. Our community residents are fed up with the current procedures used by the DP&R. We are recommending that city residents call 311 and lodge a formal complaint.

It takes 10 minutes.

When you call, ask for the operator’s name and be sure to state that you would like to submit an AGENCY COMPLAINT AGAINST THE DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION’S LIFEGUARD TRAINING AND TESTING PROGRAM – stating that their program in inherently flawed.

MAKE CERTAIN THAT THEY DON’T TRANSFER YOU TO DP&R.

With the request, make the following recommendations:

1. All testing for lifeguards should be open for public viewing.
2. Touch pads must be used when testing individuals to be admitted to the lifeguard training program and for final testing after training for beaches and pools.
3. Stop all testing in their current antiquated facility of 59th street.
4. MOVE ALL TESTING TO THE NEW STATE OF THE ART POOL RECENTLY OPENED BY THE DP&R IN FLUSHING MEADOW PARK.

BEORE HANGING UP, GET A COMPLAINT NUMBER FROM THE 311 OPERATOR!

On Tuesday, March 11, CB14’s subcommittee formally requested a meeting with Commissioner Benepe to discuss the recommendations out Planning Board has made in the past and are currently making. Commissioner Benepe’s unwillingness to meet with the community to discuss our concerns is viewed as a major part of the problem. His lack of responsiveness in the past has been duly noted.
