- Weve Done It -- Tom Bert & Bast, 16:42:30 07/30/06 Sun [3]
Well as the note below suggests below WEVE DONE IT. This has honestly been the most difficult yet amazing experience of our lives.
To give you a little bit of an update from our last mail. Thursday saw us taking on our most challenging stage, 50 miles, having already completed 101 miles in the previous 4 days it wasnt going to be fun!!
Wed had a rough night before hand as tempertures dipped to minus 7, a temperature you try not to sleep for fear of not waking up!!
After apprx 30 km I hammered my to against a very large piece of salt flat! This proved to be a rather painful injury. I had to get it lanced and drained of fluid at 40km mark with a further 35 km left. Bert had kill pains shooting down his leg which came in very intense waves. Bast was also having knee and blister trouble.
We crossed the finished line after 14 hrs, very tired and most of us in alot of pain.
We had a rest day friday again more drilling on the toe nail to drain the fluid and get it fixed for what is known as the "Glory March" (the final 10 km push for the to the finish on saturday). After a relaxing day we endured another night of freezing temperatures before heading off on our final quest.
The finish was epic, we sprinted into the main square with bands playing and greeted with pizza and beers...food and drink never tasted so good.
We have all thoroughly enjoyed the experience but by no means would recommend it to anyone...at this stage!
Were still nursing injuries and am sure will continue to do so for some time.
Well update more later.
Many thanks to all those whove posted & sent us messages they have been truely fantastic and so uplifting.
All our best
TOM BERT & BAST

- MANY CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -- STUART PRIOR, 00:56:17 07/31/06 Mon [1]
Hi Bertie
Just a quick note to say that everyone in the office has been tracking your incredible progress during the race and are amazed at your success....we are all very proud of you.
I think a simple finish would have been one hell of an achievement , but the team coming in third is awesome.
I hope you are now going to put your feet up for a while and get some R and R. Now you can reflect on the memories of one great achievement. These will sustain on cold winter evenings for years to come.
All the best, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
Cheers
STUART

- THEY FINISHED -- phillips, 23:22:50 07/29/06 Sat [1]
They finished!!
After the toughest dessert marathon most competitors could remember, Tom,Bert and Bastie finished yesterday with the sorest feet imaginable and managed to get third place in the team event and finish around 40th place individually....there were 141 starters...
Their hardest moment they all agreed was starting the 50 mile stretch on day 5 ...it began with 12 miles of salt flats (temp approaching high 30's, rucksacks feeling only slightly lighter) where each step was "like going through a sheet of ice and sinking into soft fudge up to your calf, with an element of ploughed field thrown in....not to mention the effects of the salt on blistered feet !! "
They have exceeded their target of raising 20,000 for Cancer Research UK .
BRIILIANT LADS....WE ARE ALL SOOOOO PROUD OF YOU !!

- The ATACAMA Lads -- Charlie Allen (Pretty cheery), 03:35:55 07/24/06 Mon [1]
Hello Legends!
Just a note to motivate you boys whilst you're on the move....give those marathon enthusiasts a run for their money, and don't let Phillips near any of the older ones as he is v.likely to open a can of whoopass on them...
Little joke for you lads to keep morale high and keep altitude sickness at bay: -
Man walks into a pub, goes upto the barman and orders a pint of beer. He takes his pint and sits down to read his paper.
10 minutes later in walks a woman, the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. She goes to the bar and orders a drink, takes it and sits down in the corner.
Eventually the man finishes his pint, at the same time the woman goes to the bar to get another drink.
At this point the man thinks to himself "This is it, this is my chance to chat to her"
So he goes to the bar orders a pint and starts chatting to him.
As it turns out she's been checking him out as well, working out how to approach him.
So, they start dating and fall madly in love.
A few years down the line they're getting married.
The groom is stood at the altar, feeling nervous but excited.
The doors to the church swing open and in walks the brides father, he's walking straight for the groom.
He puts his arm around his shoulder's, smiles and says;
"I like you, my wife likes you, my daughter loves you, your good for my daughter and my family"
The groom smiles.
The father then says; "there is however one small problem"
"what's that?" asks the man
"well, she's got a slight problem, you see she's got acute angina"
laughing, the man says;
"oh yeah I know......she's also got a cracking pair of tits"

- One Day To Go... -- TOM BERT & BAST, 05:49:22 07/22/06 Sat [2]
Right here we are 24 hrs till the start of the race and things are getting a little serious. WEre getting bused up to our base camp tonight at 10000 ft. Were up tomorrow morning at 5 to prepare eat breaky and then getting bused to the start line at 14,000 ft. People have already been up to see what its like up there and its pretty hard on the lungs.
The town is electirc with loads of runners all from different walks of life. Billy, our new found wigan friend (60 ish), has been seen wonderiung the streets with his back pack on, two days early, delirious from the altitude. WEre gonna keep an eye on him!
Weve had some bad news with regards to sending mails and have now been told that we cant send update mails which is very frustrating so apologies to all those who were looking forwards to the updates. Best place to get these now is from www.racingtheplanet.com click on atacama for the lastest news from the camp.
Weve got to go check in in a bit and check weve got all our mandatory kit for the race.
If you want to get mails to us send them to the competitor email section off the main website. They get printed off and put in a book for all to see so nothing incriminating please!!
Anyway must go and make final touches to our packs. Love to all and send us some positive vibes as well be needing them.

- Two Days To Go -- TOM BERT & BAST, 06:10:22 07/21/06 Fri [2]
OK after a very long journey weve arrived at in San Pedro De Atacama. First obsevation was "its a little dry"...
Not too sure what else we were expecting. Its a very small town with not much more than dirt roads and rabid dogs...the four legged variety!!
On the flight in we were treated to a sneak preview of some of the terrain well be running on and it looks very bleak, yet itll will positivly be some of the best scenery well ever experience. We were also delighted to see what positive PR the event is getting in the national papers. One such article, twice, singling out runners from the event including "a producer from MTV"!! Bast tried to share his new found fame with a Korean competitor he was sat next to on the plane, but he was having non of it, very difficult to impress a Korean you see!
Were meeting so many different people, some with years and years of ultra marathon experience, Everest climbing tales, adventure racing stories...and there is us! Little to no experience and sporting the team name of Chile Gone Barmy..again the Koreans couldnt find the humourous link between our name and a well know chiliean dish!!!
Weve got a meeting tonight to compare sacs, so to speak, and try and slime down even further. Word on the street is that were looking at a 10 kg pack however we cut it!
Well update you later loads of love to all
TOM BERT & BAST
p.s. keep the messages coming as were loving them. George thanks for the advice, a 10 day race suits us just fine!!!

A Tip from the Top. Don't run a seven day race. Think of it as a 10 day race so that when things get tough at the end, as they inevitably will, you will have plenty of reserve in your mental and physical tanks!
Best of Luck Boys and enjoy the experience. It won't come round again - we hope!
