Re: Tax Grievance

We are still fine tuning some of the strategies we hope will reduce our taxes, but the most feasible solution will be the changing of the political landscape in November by voting for candidates who understand that higher taxes is not the solution, and that the city cannot continue to balance it’s budget on our backs. Furthermore, we will only endorse candidates who support lower taxes and have a long term economic plan for our city; hence, preventing a continuation of the existing state of affairs in our city. We will keep everyone abreast by e-mail or via our website www.newburghcc.com as we get closer to election.

We are conducting a city wide tax grievance. This is an attempt not only to give relief to tax payers but we are also sending a strong message to our local and state government that we cannot afford this tax increase. At the same time, we are hoping that this will also create a possible budget shortfall. We are asking that everyone participate by getting the word out to their neighbors because the more people we get on board it will make this endeavor more worthwhile. In addition, it is important to note that only home owner who files a tax grievance will get a reduction if eligible.

The strategy is to challenge the cities appraised value, but we have to look at this carefully when the 2011 tax roll is released in March. This will be used to determine if the city appraised value is comparable to the fair market value of our homes. Normally, the grievance process will take two to three months. We anticipate the city may not settle; however. If this is the case we will proceed in scheduling a court date. According to the tax reduction company, fees are base on a contingency basic; therefore, we will not be subjected to any upfront cost.

Therefore, we need everyone to go to our website and register. The following are required, name, address and indicate if your home is single or two family residents. This information will be used to get a preliminary analysis to determine whether or not you may get a reduction. A meeting will be scheduled in the coming weeks if necessary to discuss this process in more details.
