Subject: Much a-doo about trash, trees & triple budgets

Hearing a lot about current fiscal woes in Nbg & none of them are anything new. Nbg govt. historically takes, takes, takes, stuffs their pockets & off they run. Actually, they stroll because they don't have to run. They know, based on a long history, that whatever they do, whatever they take is theirs in the clear. Residents/citizens do nothing to recover loses & when new elections occur, nothing changes except the names.

One item of contention is the tripling budget for parks. (Parks? Oh right, those "green spaces" where housing & business used to exist.) As somebody put it: Build it & they'll use it. More like abuse it. Nbg's parks are nothing much more than little landfills, the perfect place to drop everything from the household trash to all sorts or remains.

Once upon a time, & I know I'm opening a door to Hell here, somebody actually DID make a heroic effort to cleanup Downing. Brought back the old rose garden, trimmed the dead growth, cleared out the poison ivy, even went & got blue barrels for people to use to keep garbage in one place.

One bright citizen supported the efforts by bringing the kids up to the upper park, at least once every week. The kids went around picking up the lose trash & put it in the barrels! Imagine that! VOLUNTEERING to pick up the slack of PAID city employees who didn't bother to exercise their "job responsibilities".

The result of the efforts: The Downing Park Planning Commission resented the efforts & "reported" the volunteers to the local police, tried to press charges of "criminal trespass",defacing public property, damage of "Historical" property & the likes. After all the work to reclaim & repair the otherwise neglected section of the park was complete, St. Lukes Hospital held a tony formal affair at the pergola & the person who'd cleaned the place up wasn't only prohibited from attending the gala FUNDRAISER, but was placed on a police watch list that prohibited him/her from being IN the park ANYWHERE on the evening of the event.

There. You want to know what's wrong with Nbg? There's a start. You resent being told the truth because truth doesn't make you look bad, it just brings your faults to the surface into the bright light of day.

How about making some kind of attempt at taking control over what's technically yours in the first place? Your taxes pay to create & keep the parks where they are. It takes nothing to maintain them if everybody pitches in. You live in a place, rented or owned. You're not entitled to sit back while somebody else does your dishes any more than you're entitled to having somebody else keep your sidewalk tidy. You're NOT entitled. And the condition of where you reside is a direct indication of the kind of person you are. Trash always looks like trash, good quality always looks like good quality.

Bottom line: Once upon a time ONE person took action to keep Nbg presentable. There's NO excuse or reason why even ONE person can't continue the effort. You live in it, there's no reason why you shouldn't or can't help maintain it. Where govt. fails, the citizens, who FAR OUTNUMBER the govt. have no excuse for doing nothing. It's YOUR house (city). How about behaving appropriately?
