How much of the new city budget will be allocated to the purchase of fiddles this fiscal period? A legitimiate question in view of the recent council decision to reject NFD offers in their new, now dead on the table contract. The contract that provided for savings to the city and avoided the layoffs of 12 much needed firefighters and the closing of fire houses, among other highly noteable items and concessions. It now looks like the response to a 911 call to a fire will result in the rapid delivery of a fiddle and musical score, written by Nero, so residents may while away the time watching homes and businesses turn to glowing embers.

I can't help but think: If a property owner pays taxes on an empty lot, there's continued revenue to the city but no human responsibility because nobody's actually there. Is an empty lot actually more valuable than one with a house or structure on it? Is the "Open Space Commission" that powerful around here? We seem to be getting a lot of that and more to come in the foreseeable future.

With a smaller fire dept. best to look closer at riverfront property now. Make friends with your neighbors. Bring on the Bucket Brigade.

Oh Nero!
