Words of great wisdom & advice from our City Council: "If you don't like it here, go! Get out!"

OK. She's right. So I'm packing.

I was born in St. Lukes much before they expanded into the monster that shadows Dubois St. Went to school when Liberty St. had a school & St. Pat's High had Christian brothers. Went to the Ritz & Broadway movies, then up to the Commodore for ice cream. On hot summer nights I went up to the bluff for "air conditioning". I fed peacocks in Downing Park. Packed groceries in the Grand Union. Had my picture taken on Santa's lap in Sears down on Water St. Opened my first savings account at Newburgh Savings.

I'm not happy here anymore & my elected government, the people I trusted to keep and maintain the dignity of my home slaps me with unreasonable taxes, takes no responsibility for the economic woes, ignores the blight that's taken hold over the course of many years & tells me to "get out". OK.

I'll go for a short sale on the house. Sell to the first potential buyer who walks in the door. Or maybe I'll just walk away & give the property to the city & let them deal with it. Why not? The important thing is I'll be "out" just like the city wants.

Voting them out doesn't seem to be a likely option. I'm part of an impotent minority that has fought & failed. I turn the place over to the council members who are happy with the way things are & the people who support them. I'm the one who's not happy so I'm the one who should leave. Obviously I'm part of the minority so I must go. My crime is that I cared. Exile is the punishment. So I leave everything, a lifetime behind on the demand of the government.

Someday I'll come back through Newburgh & walk through waist high weeds in the empty lot where my home once stood.

Thanks Regina. Thanks for the support & sagely advice. You're right. I will NOT pay taxes to support you, your cronies, your delusions, your supporters & all the rest who choose to ignore reason. I'll take my money someplace else.
