For too many years to count the Heights have been a sore spot in this city. We've had our share of street gangs, displaced people from the welfare system, kids just hanging out on the streets, cars racing around at night or parked on the bluff with drinking and drugs. You name it we get it. The beautiful old houses are looking abandoned or are just being left to almost rot away. People come and go for all kinds of reasons and turnover in the renting people is so constant that most of us don't know who anybody is any more. We bought an old house here a few years ago because it's beautiful. The views of the river are so soothing. Sitting on the bluff was a really big plus. We were told the neighborhood was old and strong and coming back. We managed to stay through the hard times. But knowing that it was so easy for gangs to settle in the city we don't have any faith in local government any more. This is our home. We have many memories in it and a lot of money and time invested. But now it looks like we'll be selling because if gangs can come so easily there's no telling it won't just keep happening again and again. It is a fire and northend is right. You can't put out a fire just by throwing money on it. We need involved people with the support of strong and competent government and good, strong law enforcement. Newburgh history doesn't make that look promising.
