I'm sorry but I have to get this off my chest! What kind of bullshit is this all about? Of anybody around here is paying attention they remember a previous attempt to do just this very thing a couple of years ago! I remember it very well and am outraged!

I'm not going to put a name here because the person isn't in the public and I have too much respect to put his name on any board. But I remember somebody having the idea of making every empty lot in the city into a community garden. HE went to City Hall and talked with people who could help him. HE had the support of City Hall back then and went looking for empty lots to start. What do you suppose was the gratitude of the people in the neighborhood? Throwing rocks at his car and telling him to get the F out of their neighborhood! HE just kept looking into other places on Lander and Chambers Streets and all around that area. The reception was the same no matter where he went.

HERE was a man who truly wanted to give the land back to the people of the city! I remember talking about the idea with him and his take was that the kids in these areas could plant anything they wanted in a community garden. If they planted food they could eat it. If they planted flowers they could enjoy them. But they could always be proud of what they did and be proud of THEIR property. It was a plan that has worked in New York City. But NO!! It couldn't work here because of the ignorance and narrow mindedness and prejudice.

To cover this issue as something new and novel now is nothing but the kind of crap that you can't even use as fertilizer! I just have to think of it as another one of Newburgh's quick screws against somebody who tried to make things better from the heart and made the rest look bad because THEY didn't think of it or try it.

PS This man was the same one who gave us this board so that we could post our thoughts and opinions without being blocked and who tried to give up back a long abandoned part of Downing Park. BTW AFTER he did the major cleanup the DPPC and St. Luke Hospital threw their big tent bash up there taking all the credit. Nikki Giovanni had a record out many years ago. The title is very good for this post.
