Author: sci-fi fan
Subject: Is star wars sci-fi? genre question

it is pretty well known that sci fi is not a very easy genre to define. It is generally taken that sci-fi:

-HAS a basis grounded in science or scientific concepts or ideas or deals with what might happen if certain things happened/what our future might be like.
-It is also suppose to be theoretically possible, even if not likely or probable.

It also frequentally accepted that sci-fi deals with our world or universe.

Here is what I was wondering:
IS STAR WARS SCIENCE FICTION?
Many people would think that since it deals with space, BUT it doesn't deal with our future or what it might be like (it happens in a completely different galaxy and doesn't really involve US humans), isn't based or grounded in any science or scientific ideas (many things are clearly either impossible or not explained in a way to seem to be possible, such as the force); in fact the author clearly said it wasn't suppose to have anything to do with science?

So do you think it is SCIENCE fiction or a fantasy set in a completely made up world/galaxy?
