Subject: Open letter to all Kentucky Trainers from Chris Tedesco

I am proposing state legislation through the Attorney Generals office (Steve Beshear, whom is also the democratic nominee for Governor). After many personal conversations with Mr. Beshear and his aides we have tentatively set a series of meetings in November after the election to move forward with our plans. I am proposing that we not only make a state-wide stand against obesity but we also protect and regulate the personal training industry here in the state of Kentucky. I believe that if we unite as an industry and get support from both local and the state government we can and will change the health and image of Kentucky through fitness. We as fitness professionals have the tools to save lives. I believe that in a sensible way that it is our obligation to do so.

Kentucky is a great state with so much to offer in its rich history and growing economy. The unfortunate thing is that Kentucky, for most people looking in, is just a fried chicken-eating, uneducated, backwards slow-moving southern state. We are very progressive with the arts, education, and economic development. Furthermore, we have one of the leading Heart and Hand centers in the nation. So with all of these incredible resources I believe that the next great effort for Kentucky will be to tackle its growing obesity epidemic running rampant throughout our state. My proposal is to unify the personal training industry, regulate, and standardize our profession to be both a highly utilized and highly respected professional resource for the allied healthcare industry.

Through statistical research and case study after case study proper exercise protocol and diet strategies have been proven to be the most effective way to fight obesity. I believe that as a unified force we could make such an outstanding impact in the state of Kentucky that other states will be forced to follow in our initiative. This would prove that the personal training industry is the best resource for our national campaign against obesity and behavior modification. It all starts with one and my example proves that through proper exercise and diet protocol a man’s life can be saved and changed forever.

Recently, I had the fortunate pleasure of working with a man that was over seven hundred pounds. Over a two-year period we not only worked on his behavioral patterns, we also helped him achieve, through his and my combined effort, a total weight loss of well over two hundred pounds. Not every case will be as successful and we can’t reach everyone, but take the following numbers into your mind. If in the state of Kentucky we reach out to four thousand people in need of professional personal training and we take off just twenty pounds from each of these individuals, we would reach a record weight loss of over forty tons of fat. That is the equivalent of twenty full-size pickup trucks. What a difference that would make in the health of Kentuckians!

I also challenge the state, in our desperate need to face this epidemic, to grant financial assistance through tax incentives, grants, and promotion from state and local leadership. I believe that with these combined efforts we will not only reach our goal, but be an example for other states to follow. Over the past three years, working with obese clients, I have developed a system in behavior modification and a practical skills plan to allow the individual to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I would be privileged to share that plan with the state and the nation.

Through the organization of personal trainers in the state of Kentucky by way of the Kentucky Association of Fitness Professionals, founded by J.R. Smith, we want to establish a network that personal trainers can rely on to protect and regulate the industry, provide networking and job opportunities, provide healthcare insurance and retirement plans, and provide physician referrals to personal trainers. To this date, the personal training industry has left its trainers to their own devices. Our goal, as the KAFP, is to provide leadership and experience and help our colleagues grow as professionals. We all know that being self-employed is difficult enough, so we believe the number one priority should be the healthcare of our members. The number two priority is our standard as professionals. In my years of experience as a fitness professional, I have found the National Board of Fitness Examiners to be the most consistent among all certifying bodies. The National Boards went to great efforts to view all NCCA recognized certifications and find the commonalities in order to provide the most comprehensive testing procedure. Utilizing this testing protocol will standardize our qualification and allow the allied healthcare profession to validate our protocol.

Sincerely,
Chris Tedesco...
