Growing up in the 50s and 60s it was embarrassing whenever my mom would talk with any of her friends and tell them about the enema that I just had or was about to get. She was not alone as all the moms in the neighborhood always shared their family's medical issues. I don't think I'm alone on this experience either.

You are not alone.

In fact, MY MOM was 'known' as the neighborhood enema Mom, and other Mothers BROUGHT their children over to our house just so that my Mom would/could give them their enemas.

Perhaps suprisingly, or not, most of those kids brought in didn'd much 'mind' being given their enemas by my Mother. She was just THAT GOOD at giving gentle, over the knee enemas with a bulb syringe that the kids getting them quickly learned to just cooperate with the procedure.

Hey, in writing this note, I just remembered that I don't ever recall my Mom washing or rinsing out the enema bulb in any special way. I bet she swished it with a bit of soapy water, but I don't think she ever 'STERILIZED' it, or went to any special trouble to prevent any transmission of illness amongst any of us. How 'bout that?

Back then enemas were given I think for many reasons. I know when i was sick enemas were given and it was the same in many houses. I heard my friends moms talking about giving an enema or the need for one which usually happened when they were together having coffee. If I was home sick it did happen a few times that my mom would say she had given me an enema or was going to do it later on. That was the way it was. I have had similar conversations with other moms but not very often. Some of the moms I know have probably never given an enema!

You were hardly alone. The only thing worse than all the moms talking about the enemas they gave us was when my mom went over to help the mom of my best friend give an enema. I don't know who was embarrassed more when she went back to school. We were probably about 10 and up until that time she had only gotten enemas from a bulb. My mom went to help give an enema from the bag.

The mother next door told my mother that she gave her girls enemas when they were bad. "It is a good punishment and it is good for their health". She said this out in the yard ... I was outside and heard every word of the conversation. At that point I was afraid that my mother might adapt the practice and as a six year old I hated enemas. I got enough enemas for being constipated.

I got enemas when I was constipated or sick or as a preparation for a longer trip - but never as a punishment!

What I dreaded most was my Mom telling her neighborhood friend that Charyl needed a good enema. Since there was nothing good about getting an enema at age 8 I would try to hide but Mom always found me. If I protested too much Mom would put me over her knee, raise my dress, and spank me. I would soon be begging her to stop and give me the enema. Then off with my panties, in with the enema tip, and soon the dreaded click.

To me this is a funny thread title. I never thought this way about other moms when growing up. I was surprised to find out that some of my friends had enemas too and to see an enema bag in their bathroom. My mom was good friends with the mom of one of my best friends who I learned got enemas as I did. Jackie's mom was the first mom I heard talking to my mom about enemas which was before I received it later that evening. I was at Jackies one afternoon and she told me her mom was going to give her an enema since she was constipated. I was surprised to hear that which was really my feelings about the anticipation of it. When I went home my mom was on the phone and I went to my room and watched TV. My mom came in and asked how Jackie was feeling since she had just got off the phone with her mom. All I said was that she had a stomach ache since I did not think to tell her what I knew. My mom said that Jackies mom was going to give her an enema and that would take care of her stomach problems. I suppose that makes them enema moms. There were several times that Jackies mom knew I was given or was going to be given an enema and Jackie would tell me about it.

After school I often went home from school with my friend Candy to her house. We often sat in the kitchen chatting and eating cookies with her elder brother.

One afternoon we got in and there was the long box for an enema bag on the counter. Candy's brother was at the table and her mom came in soon. She got the bag out and started filling it at the sink and told me I should go home because Candy was about to get an enema. I asked if I could stay and talk with Phillip, but her mom said "No, I want him to help with Candy's enema". I reluctantly left, wishing I could have been a fly on the wall.

My mother did the same exact thing. In a way it was good because all the moms knew what bugs were circulating around and what to do about them. Although no matter what I seemed to ever come down with my mother felt that an enema would probably help and even if it didn't then it wouldn't hurt to give a little cleaning out.

In those days neighbors really knew one another and there weren't many secrets. Not only about enemas but for everything. I was 12 and just got my first ever period, but soon everyone around knew about it.
