Date Posted: 13:07:39 08/13/07 Mon On August 17-19, Seaside residents and visitors can experience the closest thing to time travel when the Seaside Historical Museum celebrates Seaside’s contribution to the historical Lewis and Clark expedition by hosting the Saltmakers Return. During the Corps of Discovery’s stay in NW Oregon in the winter of 1805-06, some members were dispatched to what would eventually become Seaside. There they replenished the Corps’ store of salt by boiling sea water around the clock for 48 hours. Signs declaring “You Are Now Entering 1806” will be posted at the Avenue U beach access where men in period costume and manner will provide first person interpretation of the event which provided the Corps with the staple necessary to succeed in their return to civilization. In first person interpretation, the interpreters "become" a person from the past and move about and respond as that person would have. The interpreters remain true to history by speaking in period dialect and being completely unaware of any cultural or technological reference beyond the year 1806. The interpreters have thoroughly studied the past lives of each man portrayed, army protocols of the time and their personal adventures en route to the Northwest. Visitors to the encampment are encouraged to ask questions, but the interpreters will be playing their parts so completely they won't "understand" modern words, slang or references to modern conveniences. The event also features “contextual greeters,” museum volunteers who are placed at the entrance to this “other time” and prepare visitors for this temporal adventure. As one of the greeters put it: “My job is to welcome visitors to the Lewis & Clark Salt Works and let them know they are traveling back to the year 1806. They are to forget the hotels, houses and parked cars a few hundred yards behind them and imagine they are approaching this camp 201 years ago. The visitors will soon find themselves entering a different culture.” Greeters advise that the best way to start a conversation with a Saltmaker is to ask, 'How are you today?' 'Where are you from?' and 'What is your name?' and ask about their journey. In addition they have items on hand for visitors to conduct trade with the Corps members The interpretive site is just a few blocks south of the actual site where the saltmakers worked, which was determined during the Lewis & Clark Centennial 100 years ago through discussions with local tribal members still living who remembered the group. A replica of the rock construction used to boil the water commemorates the occasion. The Saltmakers Return is a particularly fun, interesting and extremely detailed interactive interpretation,. Staying true to the historical events, these role players will also perform their duties for 48 hours straight, starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug 17 and going until 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 19. The Friends group works with the City of Cannon Beach in supportof the popular Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP), an exciting and well-known stewardship program established in 1983. This year Friends of Haystack Rock is hosting a Volunteer Open House to give interested citizens an idea of how HRAP works and what volunteers can do in support of this unique program. Members of the Friends group will welcome visitors to the Open House, a "drop-in" affair, on Saturday, May 19, 2007, from 9 am until 1 pm, in the Council Chambers at Cannon Beach City Hall (169 E. Gower Street). Participants in this FREE EVENT will be able to take a guided tour of intertidal areas at Haystack Rock (10 am only), learn about tidepool etiquette, get a brochure filled with information on fascinating creatures that live in the Marine Garden and National Wildlife Refuge, get a copy of HRAP's schedule on the beach, get lists of recommended books, pamphlets,videos, etc., see photos of people at work on the beach and talk with experienced volunteers about exciting opportunities both on the beach and behind the scenes. Aspiring interpreters who want to work with the public must be at least 16 years old but need not have a background in marine biology or previous experience in interpretive activities. Interpreters-to-be will receive both classroom training (Saturday, June 2, 2007) and additional hands-on experience on the beach with HRAP staff orexperienced volunteers. New volunteers who work behind the scenes may also receive training for specific duties. Refreshments will be available and door prizes awarded during this 4-hour event. Registration is not mandatory and implies no commitment but would allow us to estimate how many materials to have on hand for the event. Main Ave. The event includes a children’s egg hunt, refreshments, contemporary worship and praise music, children’s music and dramatic presentations. It's sponsored by Warrenton Christian Church. Pastor Tony Coulombe will give the message. Two local children, Erin Hulti and Daria Van De Grift, will perform an interpretive dance. Refreshments will be served in the high school cafeteria beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday, April 8. The celebration begins at 10:30 a.m. in the gymnasium. Date Posted: 08:14:56 01/18/07 Thu The Clatsop County 4-H Exchange Program is currently looking for host families for its Japanese Exchange Program. The exchange students are in Clatsop County July 26th - August 22nd. Exchange Students are between the ages of 12 - 18, their English skills varies with each student. We match the age and interests of an exchange student with one of the children in a host family, i.e., baseball player to a host sibling who is a baseball player, 12 year old boy with 12 year old boy. Families do not need to have an extra bedroom, it is preferred that they room with their host sibling. Families complete an application process and home interview with county coordinator, attend an orientation and are provided support materials. Japanese Chaperones are available during the home stay period as well as local and state program staff. The exchange students come to America to experience American family life and to try to improve their English skills, they are not here as tourists. The come with their own spending money. Host families provide room and board and general family items such as dinner at a restaurant. Exchange students have full medical coverage. If your child attends a camp or similar program during the home stay period, the program will pay for the exchange student to also attend. Placements are being made now. All placements must be made no later than May 1, 2007, for the upcoming summer. Host families can begin corresponding as soon as placement is confirmed. This Nationally recognized school employs the talents of experienced high performance drivers from all over the Pacific Northwest; these drivers come from racing, rally, and law enforcement backgrounds, to teach young drivers emergency driving skills in a controlled environment. Last year there were almost 30 National Racing and Autocross championships among our instructors; one is even in the "Guinness Book of World Records" for his driving expertise. This school is offered to local students 16-21 for a simple registration fee of only $15.00 all instructors are volunteer. Learn stage production techniques as we do it all: direct, design, produce and perform. Class members will go from light-booth to fitting room, from backstage to onstage for a hand on exploration into mounting a production. The group also has the fun of presentation when THEATER AS YOU LIKE IT becomes THEATER AS WE LIKE IT with a showcase of selected scenes presented by the Workshop’s ensemble. The program includes a lecture series featuring: Bud Clark, great, great, great grandson of Captain William Clark, at 7 pm, on Friday; Rex Ziak, author of Lewis & Clark - Down and Up the Columbia River, at 7 pm on Saturday, Gary Lentz of the Washington State Governor's Lewis & Clark Trail Committee, at 2 pm on Sunday. There will also be bus tours of the Lewis & Clark campsites along the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, one led by Rex Ziak and another by Jim Sayce, Washington State Historical Society Liaison to Lewis & Clark National & State Park. Other events include: tours of the Confluence Site at Cape Disappointment State park, a seafood dinner prepared by the Chinook Tribe, the 8th annual 'O How Horrible is the Day' weekend at the Knappton Cove Heritage Center and an open house at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in Cape Disappointment State Park. If you are looking for a unique Christmas present this is the place to come. In addition many of the restaurants and hotels in Cannon Beach donate gift certificates of meals and overnight lodging as prizes to be raffled at the festival. Visitors may also purchase raffle tickets for a hand-stitched, queen-size quilt. The quilt, which was designed and created by Library Club volunteers, is an exclusive collector's item. Refreshments include "special" hot dogs, homemade cookies, brownies and beverages. The Festival is held at the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce at Second and Spruce streets from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 20 and 21. All proceeds from the event go toward supporting the library. On November 3rd at 8:30AM they will be at the Astoria Middle School and 10:15AM they will be at the Knappa Grade School putting on an program why kids should remain drug free and stay in school. Saturday evening November 4th they will perform a basketball game at 7PM at the Astoria Middle School. Any funds raised will be used to put on a Christmas party for all the foster children in Clatsop County, Sponsor a Room for homeless famlies at the Pioneer House, scolarships at both Astoria and Warrenton High Schools, support The Builders Club at Warrenton Grade School and the Key Clubs at both Astoria and Warrenton High Schools.
