Model A Bones are fine for a light engine (Banger, Flathead, etc) but I wouldn't use them on a Small Block Ford/Chevy or anything bigger. They are just too weak. I prefer the '47-48 wishbones myself (the ones with the bend in them from the factory) but the '32-'46 bones are just as good, and way better than the Model A bones. Plus, the '32-'48 bones are WAY longer than 28-31 Model A wishbones and that gives you a more stable ride. You should be able to find an unsplit wishbone '32-'48 for under $75 at a swapmeet, or expect to pay around $100 on ebay for a pair of split bones with bungs already welded. I like to get raw, unsplit bones and do the welding myself because I just don't trust anyone else. I've seen people run Model A bones with blown Hemi's but I wouldn't do it.

Expect to pay atleast $500 for a running 289/302/351 Small Block Ford, with a C4 or 3/4-spd. Consider that your budget, and try to find one cheaper, but I'd pay no more than that. The 289's are getting harder to find, the 302/351's are uber common and can be found in damn near any Ford from the 60's-80's. Keep your eyes peeled for a complete car or truck, because you'll save yourself a shit-ton of trouble by having all the parts you need in one package. You can find 70-80's Granadas, F-150's, Mustangs, Bronco's, etc that might look like shit and run like shit, but the whole car might cost $500. That gives you an engine/trans, rear differential, maybe brakes, maybe steering components, misc parts that you'll be wishing you had when you're climbing over a heap of rusted shit at the salvage yard for.

You need to head out to John's in Seguin and pick through his stockpile of Fords.

There's a '72 Ford F-100 on craiglist right now in Oak Hill for $650. Another '72 in North Austin for $600, and a '79 Ford Van in Wimberley for $400. Any of those would be good candidates for stripping apart, then sell the leftover for scrap.
