Basically, there are collections being held at Twickenham on Saturday and at the Millennium on Wednesday for the memorial funds of a couple of the passengers on United Airlines Flight 93, the plane that crashed outside Pittsburgh. The guys involved, Mark Bingham and Jeremy Glick, were both big in the US rugby community, and thought to have been among those who fought back against the hijackers. Below are some more details. Unfortunately, some of my collectors for the Twickenham collection have dropped out, and I need more people to help as some volunteers have had to drop out for various reasons. If anyone would be interested, please mail me ASAP for details (basically, you'll be collecting from about 11am to 2.15pm, the RFU security etc know all about it, it's with their permission, if anyone wants to help but will be late that would be fine), or call me on 0790 406 1218. Sorry for using up board space.
Heroic Rugby Players Memorial Fund.
Following the devastating events in the United States on September 11, members of the Rugby Community in the British Isles have decided to raise money for two of the victims of United Airlines Flight 93, the hijacked plane that crashed outside Pittsburgh.
The Heroic Rugby Players Memorial Fund ("H.R.P.M.F.") was set up in memory of Jeremy Glick, former captain of the University of Rochester rugby team, and Mark Bingham, a member of the national championship winning University of California team of the early nineties and founding member of the San Francisco Fog.
Jeremy and Mark are both believed to have taken a leading role among the passengers thought to have fought back against the terrorist hijackers, after making their final "goodbye" telephone calls to their Families. The US Senate and House of Representatives have passed legislation titled "Honoring the Passengers and Crew of United Flight 93 Act" and ordered the striking of commemorative national medals in their honour.
The Welsh Rugby Union and the Rugby Football Union have authorised collections for the "H.R.P.M.F." and the UK organisers state that "The Fund proposes to split donations equally between the Mark Bingham Memorial Fund/CCF and the Jeremy Glick Memorial Fund, both of which have been established in the last few days in the United States."
The Mark Bingham Memorial Fund will be establishing a memorial scholarship in his honour, whilst the Jeremy Glick Memorial Fund has been established to ensure that his widow, Lyzbeth, and baby daughter, Emerson, are provided for in the immediate future.
The UK organisers added: "Though these first authorised collections are but a small gesture, we hope that these, and any further collections, will convey some indication of the regard in which the British rugby community holds Mark Bingham and Jeremy Glick, and of how the passing of two brave men few of us ever knew has impoverished us all."
In all, the USA rugby community lost at least 13 people during the attacks in the New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Only Jeremy and Mark had the chance to fight back.
The R.F.U. collection is at the England v South Africa game at Twickenham on November 24.
The W.R.U. collection is at the Barbarians v Australian game at the Millennium Stadium on November 28.
The organisers of the collections are grateful to both the WRU and RFU for their cooperation and assistance in arranging for the collections, and to the Devon & Dorset Cavalry Regiment, RAF St.Athan and DARA in the Vale of Glamorgan for their willingness to provide support for the collection, though external events have sadly curtailed their participation.
Postal donations can be sent to:-
