For seeing live shells be sure to hit the beach at low tide. It is absolutely amazing to see live shells if you haven't before! Believe it or not, on our first trip or two to Sanibel we missed this because we were unaware.

Its true to be careful around aligators. But I must say, it seems (and I think I've read) that the large gators have been removed from the island since the attacks. I was actually there for one of them...very sad. On our more recent trips we've only seen the small aligators.
