The pen shells are rather large, and easy to see, so you don't have to watch out for them particularly, but with so many shells on the beach, and many broken, I would recommend water shoes for all. They make the beach much more comfortable to walk and play on (this from a guy who walks barefoot on gravel back home, with little concern). Also, be aware that there are times of year when stingrays are abundant. They are not aggressive, and prefer to get away without being stepped on, but it helps to shufle one's feet a bit in the water, to give them fair warning. They do hurt if you get poked by one.
