I know that the alphabet shells, if found alive, you can get a nasty and painful sting but it isn't supposed to be harmful. I'm not a specialist so take what I say with a grain of salt!

I was on Sanibel for 3 weeks just recently, the shelling was not the best I've seen at all, however; that doesn't mean you won't find lots and lots of nice shells anyway.

Do watch the alligators, I saw 3 this trip, all between 4-5 feet... In the past I've seen some monsters. Stay clear of them, they are wild... Just remember, their brain is the size of a mans thumbnail, that's how hard they think before they react!
