We've stayed at Tarpon Beach once. The complex is nice, nice pool. The unit we were in had just changed hands, so it wasn't as pulled together(kind of mish-mash furnishings) as some other places we've stayed.
However, the view was good and in the end-that's what really counts for us.

You are right next to the public beach access, but unless you want total privacy, it doesn't seem to be a big issue.
I agree with Laura, anywhere you stay on Sanibel is wonderful.
We are also die-hard "West Gulfer's", but stayed this year for a few days on the east end, and found it has a charm all it's own also.
