Disclaimer: JAG is the property of Bellisario Productions, CBS, and Paramount. I have borrowed their characters for entertainment purposes only. No monetary gain will result from their appearance in my story.

Summary: This takes place in the fall before Mattie is injured, before they were sent on different assignments, and at a time when they were pulling closer to each other. They decide to get away and have some alone time together just for fun and see what happens. On a camping trip on the Long Trail they are caught in an unexpected snow storm. Mac falls and hits her head on the ground. When she wakes up, she struggles to understand just what the relationship is that she and Harm share.

Author's Note: I wrote this before the terrible tragedy with Natasha Richardson. I debated whether to pull it from the fanfic, but decided to go ahead and hope that no one was offended.

Harm’s Loft

“Harm, I thought you said you were ready?” Mac sputtered as she waited for her partner.

“I am...I just want to take an extra set of clothes in case it turns cold quickly. You did pack warm clothes didn’t you Mac?” he asked.

“I did. Harm, I have hiked in the mountains before. I know it can turn cold quick especially in October and that even a storm can blow in. Remember, I asked you if this was such a good idea when we had to postpone our trip three weeks ago?”

“I know. I checked the weather and we’ll be back before the storm front blows in. They don’t expect it until Monday and we’re heading home Sunday morning.”

“Okay, lets hit the road then.”

1605 EST
The Lodge on the Long Trail

“It is absolutely beautiful up here, Harm. How did you find out about this place?”

“Keeter...he dated a girl that lived not far from here and she was into skiing, hiking, lots of outdoors stuff.”

“Sounds perfect for Keeter,” Mac grinned picturing the two fly-boys together getting into mischief over the years.

“Yeah, I actually thought she was the one for him,” Harm admitted.

“But?”

“She hated flying even more than you do.”

“I don’t hate flying, Harm.....I hate feeling sick...there is a difference you know.” Mac grinned at Harm. The two had spent years denying any sign of weakness. The two had grown closer, but they still hadn’t taken that final step that would bind them together forever. Neither was quite ready to give the final inch, although the teasing was no longer hurtful as it often had turned for a few years.

“I didn’t realize that, but I know what you mean. Got everything?” Harm asked as he prepared to lock the car.

“I’m good.”

“So you say...I figured it made more sense to head out in the morning from here and catch a ride to the trail head. We can leave the car here and arrange for a ride when we get back. That way we can clean up a little before we return to the city Sunday morning.” Harm hesitated waiting for Mac to support his plan.

“Works for me. Nice place, too. One room or two?” Mac asked.

“I reserved two, but you know me....I’m all for saving money,” Harm winked at Mac as they approached the front door with their overnight bags.

“Then get one room...” Mac told him.

Harm barely paused and nodded without much reaction.

Mac went on, barely pausing for his reaction. “I don’t mind letting you sleep on the floor.”

Mac loved teasing him. She knew it was highly likely that they would finally share more then a bed tonight if they had one room.

“One room it is, Mac.” Harm smiled hoping that this was it.

After registering at the hotel and making arrangements for a ride to the trail head the next morning, Harm opened the door to their room.

The king size bed was on one end, with a sofa and chair on the other. In the middle was a desk, bureau, and the door to the bathroom. Mac grinned as she turned to Harm.

“You lucked out. There’s a couch for you.”

Harm looked at the couch that opened into a full size bed. If indeed Mac wasn’t going to share the king size bed with him, then he could make do sleeping on the sofa bed. Sharing a bed with Mac and not touching her would be impossible. They’d come so close so many times and his resistance had evaporated. He wanted Mac and the next time he wasn’t going to screw it up.

They made sure their things were ready for morning and then decided to have an early dinner and an early night. They walked into the lodge dining room and were immediately seated by a smiling woman that would also be their waitress.

“Would you like a scenic table, or one more secluded and romantic?” she asked smiling at Harm and Mac.

“It’s getting dark, so not much sense in a scenic table, is there?” Harm asked figuring it was a less obvious way of asking for a more romantic setting for their dinner.

“Oh with the lights outside you’ll still be able to see the garden,” she explained.

“That’s okay...it’s been a long day. We’ll take a more secluded table,” Mac instructed the woman.

“Good choice.” She winked before she led them through the rustic lodge dining area and seated them in an alcove with a view of the fireplace. The table, tucked into a little alcove, gave them a great deal of privacy.

“I’ll give you a few minutes to look over the menu. Anything to drink?” their waitress asked.

“I’ll have sparkling water,” Mac told her.

“I’ll have the same..”

“Harm, have a beer or a drink if you want one.”

“Mac, have you ever known me to hold back if I wanted a drink?”

“Once or twice maybe.”

“Fine. Maybe I have a few times...but I would prefer something non-alcoholic tonight.”

“Two sparking waters coming right up,” the smiling woman promised as she placed the menus on their table and dashed off.

“What’s with you tonight, Harm?” Mac asked, her voice light and teasing.

“Nothing...they say it’s not good to hike in higher elevations with alcohol in your system,” Harm explained.

“We’re not that high up,” Mac muttered. “I think I’ll have the filet mignons. I hear protein is good for building muscles and endurance.”

“Figures....I thought I’d try the salmon.”

“Split a salad and baked potato with me?” Mac asked.

“Of course.” It was a little thing they had done for years. It felt right.

Harm gave the order to the waitress as soon as she returned. After she had gone to place their order, Harm turned back to Mac to find her watching him.

“What?” he asked puzzled by the intense look she gave him.

“How would you describe what we have to someone we meet for the first time?”

“Friends...”

“Just friends?” Mac pushed a little more.

“Mac, we’ve never really dated; we’ve known each other a long time, but we’re more than colleagues or we wouldn’t be here this week. We’re not engaged, married, or even sleeping together.”

“We could.”

“Yeah...but apparently we aren’t ready for that step yet, or you wouldn’t be crawling into a king size bed while I sleep on the sofa bed,” Harm gave her the look that said she knew he was right. Mac ignored it.

“You can have the king size bed, Harm...” Mac offered.
“Not if I’m going to be alone in it. I’d rather keep things they way they are.”

“Why’s that?”

“Cause I can hold it over you if I can’t keep up with you on the trail tomorrow,” Harm joked steering them away from a conversation that was too soon to have when they had only ordered their meal.

“You are getting up there Harm,” Mac agreed with him, her eyes sparkling with merriment.

“You’ve got that right,” Harm grimaced, doubting Mac knew to what he was really referring to.

The constant state of arousal he had lived with for most of the time they had been together was getting more difficult to disguise, especially in their civilian clothes. Right now he was glad the lighting was low and the table hid his lap.

Mac turned to study the fireplace, trying to hide the laughter that wanted to break free from her control. Harm had no idea she had noticed his discomfort several times, most recently when they were waiting to be seated at their table this evening. Her tongue in cheek comment had more than one meaning, and she had meant to hint to him that she was more aware of the situation than he seemed willing to admit.. This trip should be one to remember!

After an enjoyable dinner where they exchanged tongue in cheek quips thinking the other didn’t get the double meaning, they decided to take a walk along the lit pathways through the grounds around the lodge.

Mac let her hand hang loosely at her side hoping Harm would finally take her hand in his and draw her closer. She hoped he would make another move without her prodding. At first, she had shut him out when he had, not wanting to get her hopes up. Then she started being more receptive, but lately he hadn’t made any attempt to make physical contact with her. She wasn’t sure why when she knew he wanted it as much as she did.

Harm on the other hand, tried to remain relaxed and ignore the temptation of her hand. The last time he had tried to make a physical connection, she had knocked his hand away. He admitted his timing could have been better, but still her rejection had taken him by surprise as he was sure they were getting closer. Deciding he had to chance it one more time, he spotted a tree with colored leaves still clinging to it and reached his arm behind her and over her shoulder to point it out.

“Mac, look at those leaves still hanging on,” Harm murmured as he held his arm up until her attention was directed toward the tree. “Those leaves are like us...hanging on waiting for something to happen.” He dropped his arm over her shoulder as he stepped closer to her.

Mac smiled in contentment, turning her face toward him as she spoke.
“If it storms, they won’t be able to hang on.”
“Is that what you’re afraid of Mac...that if things don’t go as we plan, we won’t be able to weather the storm...is that why you won’t give us a chance?”

“Me? I’m not the one with commitment issues, Harm.. I’ve been waiting for you to make up your mind about us for a long time.”

“Objection, counselor...I’ve been trying to get you to accept me and my attentions for months...the last time you knocked my hand away!”

“Knocked it away? Harm what are you talking about?”

Once again the passion between them blazed out of control as anger instead of the love they each wanted to express but didn’t quite know how.

“I’m talking about you knocking my hand away when I reached for you last week.”

“The day I lost that case on a technicality?” Mac asked, her voice filled with amazement at his revelation.

“That would be the one,” Harm agreed, folding his long arms across his chest as he studied her face and the blaze that seemed to be in her eyes.

“You have to be kidding me? You decide to make a move on me when I was fried from that case?” Mac could feel her emotions winding tightly inside her body as much at herself as at him. “This is unbelievable...hope they still have another bedroom, cause I’m not sharing!” Mac called as she stomped off.

“Mac, wait!” Harm dropped his chin to his chest and shook his head. After taking a few deep breaths, he slowly followed hoping she would have calmed down by the time he reached their room. He had no intentions of starting their vacation like this, and he was not giving in and moving out of the room. He would sleep on the sofa bed and pretend nothing had gone wrong come morning.

Mac stormed into the room and leaned against the door taking a few deep breaths. She knew Harm would follow her and it was probably a safe bet that he would quietly return to the room and crawl into the sofa bed without saying a word. Of course, she could apologize by taking the sofa bed herself...or waiting up for him. No that wasn’t a good idea. They’d start over tomorrow.

0930 EST
Somewhere on the Long Trail

The trail was covered with fallen foliage that crunched and crackled as they walked. A gentle breeze made some of them dance over the ground as if they were trying to keep away from the hiking boots that trod above them.

The sky was the bright clear blue of a perfect late October day. While foliage was definitely past peak in the mountainous New England region, there was a clarity and beauty to the day that Harm loved.

Side by side he and Mac tackled the slight grade that led them deeper into the woods and higher into the mountains. They hadn’t really spoken all morning, getting ready using the silent communications they were so known for. They had been hiking for over two hours and there was a place ahead where they could sit and enjoy the view and take a short rest. Harm hoped maybe they could start talking.

“Rest area up here Mac.”

“I’m fine.”

“Yes you are, but there’s a great view and it makes sense for us to take a short break and enjoy it.” Harm shook his head and kept his comments to himself. He watched as Mac crested the hill about six steps ahead of him. She stopped as she stepped off the trail.

“Oh, Harm....it is beautiful.”

“So are you.”

“What did you say?” Mac asked as she fought to breathe, not from the altitude or the exertion, but the sound of Harm’s voice which had gone deep, soft and so very sexy as he told her she was beautiful.

“I said you’re beautiful Mac...I’ve told you that before, but right now, with your face relaxed and smiling and the view behind, you....I had to say it again even if it means more of the cold shoulder.”

“Harm,” Mac began to protest until he stepped closer to her, pulling himself to his full height and looking down into her upturned face. The fight went out of her at last. “Thank you.”

Harm wasn’t sure what had just changed, but he knew it had. He could see it and feel it in the air. It wasn’t the only think he could feel in the air. It was getting colder instead of warmer as the weather had called for. Glancing up to the sky, the tension ended and the indecision of what to do or say now was taken away from him.

“Harm, it feels like its going to storm.”

“I thought so too, but that’s not what the weather channel called for last night or this morning. Not for a couple of days they said. And the sky is so clear,” Harm added.

“Well, maybe it’s the elevation. Lets keep going. We have to cover the distance we had planned if we’re going to have a shelter to sleep in tonight.”

With that they set off.

Five Hours Later

They had hiked in companionable silence after their break-through moment along the trail that morning. They had mostly hiked side by side unless the terrain was rough or the trail narrowed. They had taken pictures with the miniature digital camera Mac had brought with her capturing the scenery and each other along the trail. They saw few hikers - none since they had broken for lunch and noticed the streaks of clouds that had appeared in the sky.

Mac stopped at a bend in the hill they were ascending and shrugged off her backpack.

“You okay?” Harm asked as he turned back to see why she wasn’t still at his side. He had been measuring his steps to her so that he wouldn’t eat up more ground with his longer legs, forcing her to lengthen her stride unnaturally or run.

“Just cold. Harm I think the temperatures dropped about twenty degrees in the past hour, and I still think it feels like snow.”

“You may be right. Those clouds are getting thicker. Let’s put on an extra layer. You bring your hat and gloves?” Harm asked as he slid his pack off and began looking for another layer to add.

“Yeah...you?”

Harm held them up in answer as Mac pulled on her windbreaker jacket and removed the hat and gloves from the pockets. Once dressed more warmly, they hydrated themselves, helped each other get their packs loaded and on once again, before resuming the climb.

“We have mostly downhill after this Mac...we should be able to make the cabin by dark and get a fire started.”

“Let’s hit it then.”

Not twenty minutes later they spotted the first snowflakes. Neither said a thing - just exchanged a look and kept going. Hiking boots had good tread, so they weren’t worried about traction. They forged on.

“Mac, its getting really slippery with this snow on the leaves...be careful,” Harm warned feeling himself slip a bit.

“You too...if you go down, you’re too big for me to carry you,” Mac grinned at her partner.

“Does that mean if you go down you expect me to carry you?”

“Of course,” Mac quipped, looking back over her shoulder to toss Harm a sassy grin.

“Mac!” Harm hollered as he saw Mac’s feet lose purchase and her arms begin to flail as she fought to regain her footing and her balance.

“Watch out!” He reached out to help steady her, but it was too little too late. Mac’s feet went up and her head went back and down.

The thud as her head hit the ground turned Harm’s stomach. He rushed to her side fear overwhelming him.

“Mac...can you hear me? Come on Mac...open your eyes and tell me you’re fine....please Mac...I can’t lose you.” Frantically Harm touched her face, felt along her limbs for signs of injuries and blood. Nothing...feeling slightly relieved, he patted her cheeks again calling to her. Ripping off his jacket, he covered her crumpled form not wanting to risk hypothermia with her laying prone and still.

There was little he could do but wait for her to come around. He alternated between rubbing her hands and patting her face. He talked to her, called her name, and debated with himself over carrying her to shelter and help or waiting for her to wake up and walk out on her own. The decision was made for him, after another endless ten minute wait, when Mac opened her eyes and looked around as she slowly sat up.

“Take it easy Mac.”

“Who’s Mac?”

“Not going to work Mac...”

“What won’t work...and who’s Mac?”

Harm study his partner and friend, looking into her eyes waiting for her to laugh or show some other sign of recognition. “What’s your name?” Harm asked trying to assess the severity of her memory loss.

“Sarah....”

“What’s your last name?” Harm probed.

“I don’t know...who’s Mac?”

“Your nickname...do you know who I am?” Harm asked.

“No...but obviously we must know each other.”

“Yeah....can you walk?” Harm helped her get to her feet.

“Guess so...nothing seems to hurt much.”

“What about your head?”

“Headache...not bad.”

“Let’s get to some shelter and heat and then we’ll talk and see what we need to do next.

Three Hours Later
Cabin on the Long Trail

Harm held the door open for Mac to enter the rustic cabin where they would take shelter for the night. While Mac rested on one of two raised platforms that served as both seating and beds, Harm got a fire started in the fireplace.

“It should warm up in here soon. How you doing?”

“Okay...but I need answers.” Mac’s brow was pinched from concentrating and trying to remember.

“Like what?”

“What’s the deal with us?” Mac asked pointing to Harm and then herself.

“There's no deal. We're friends, we have a few laughs... keep it simple.” Harm hoped that down playing what simmered between them was the way to go. He didn’t want to mislead her or tell her too much too soon.

Mac studied him and then pursed her lips before asking, “Well, has it always been simple or has it ever been complicated?”

Harm gave Mac a nasty look.

“That's a yes,” Mac grimaced. “How complicated? On a scale from one to ten.”

Harm thought for a moment not sure how to play this and then decided that it was vital that he be honest with her. Once Mac got her memory back it wouldn’t be pretty if she thought he had misled her.
“Twelve.”

“That’s a little off the scale. Why so complicated?” Mac asked as if she were struggling to make the pieces to this puzzle fit.

“An excellent question. Maybe when your memory comes back we can figure it out,” Harm sighed as he held his hands out to check for the heat from his fire. “I think its warming up in here. How’s your head feeling?”

“Like I landed on it on the outside...like a drum corps is on the inside.”

“What kind of drum corps?” Harm probed, still not sure if Mac was putting one over on him or if her memory had escaped her.

“Like the Marine Corps drums of course...I’m a marine!” Mac said, the surprise and awe in her voice something Harm was sure she wasn’t faking.

“Yes you are,” Harm smiled grinning in approval.

“You too,” Mac stated as memories of this tall man in front of her dressed in marine green, drilling his men flashed in her head. The flash of pain that followed made her groan.

“Mac? What’s wrong?” Harm moved quickly to her side trying to see her eyes.

“After that memory flash my head throbbed a little harder...I’m okay. I’m an officer...Lieutenant Colonel?”

“Yes Ma’am.”

“I out rank you?”

“No Ma’am...we’re equals...”

“Sarah Mackenzie!” Mac broken in, a smile lighting her face.

“That would be you. And to answer your previous questions about me...no, I’m Navy.”

“So my memory wasn’t accurate of you?” Mac’s face was readable to anyone. She was feeling confused and Harm could hear it in her voice mixed with her attempt to be brave and tough as the Mac he knew.

Not wanting her to start doubting herself when there was a clear explanation for the memory, Harm enlightened her.

“Well it could have been...I’ve done undercover work before.”
Instead of the desired effect to boost her self confidence and sense of optimism, Mac seemed even more defeated.

“Oh...I’m so confused and tired.”

“Don’t go to sleep Mac,” Harm cautioned. “If you have a concussion, it’s not good to sleep for the first few hours. Later you can sleep in short stretches.”

“Can I eat?” Mac asked suddenly feeling hungry.

“Sure. I’ll get us some food.” Harm couldn’t stop a slight feeling of relief at the typical patterns Mac was exhibiting. That had to be a good sign.

Finally the desired effect. Mac perked up and smiled, “Thanks...can I rest my eyes while you wait on me?”

“Just keep talking to me so I know you’re awake,” Harm tossed over his shoulder as he began putting together a meal for them while he watched the snow fall outside the rough cabin’s window near the equally rough hewn table.

“So what do I talk about?” Mac asked as she lounged on the wooden bench that doubled as a raised platform bed.

“Tell me what you do remember,” Harm suggested.

“Not much really...just flashes...I can picture a couple with a baby...no...lots of kids...maybe four kids?”

“That would be Bud and Harriet.”

“And Angie...no AJ...is that right?” Mac asked clearly having some recall of her life, although it seemed to flit in and out and not all the details were there yet.

“That’s right...that’s their oldest...our first god son.”

“Ours? But you said we weren’t a couple?”

“Not in the traditional sense of the word, no...but we’ve been partnered together for years and we have been friends.”

“That’s that complicated thing, huh?” Mac asked him, her eyes still shut. She wished the pounding would stop. Maybe food would help her.

“Yeah...you want something hot with your sandwich or just a cold sandwich for now?” Harm asked.
“Let’s start with the sandwich.”

Together they ate their cold dinner while sitting by the fire. As darkness fell, Harm readied their sleeping gear on one bench near the fire.

“Mac, I think its going to be cold in here by morning, and we’ll need to share body heat.”

“Fine...I get the feeling we’ve done that before. Am I right?”

“Yes...a few times.”

Harm added logs to the fire, put away their food, made them a hot drink over the flames in the fireplace and then checked out the attached out-house for spiders before using it himself and then showing Mac where it was.

Finally they stripped off their outer clothes and slipped into the two sleeping bags Harm had zipped together and put on the wooden bed. They rolled their coats and sweaters up to use as pillows. Mac slid in first. Harm joined her, wrapping his long arms around her as he settled them together as comfortably as he could on a hard surface.

“Better than a bed of branches or rocks, huh?” Mac mumbled into his chest.

“What do you think?”

“It is...although you do make a good bed in a cave...don’t you?”

“You remember that?”

“Yeah...and then fireworks...it just doesn’t seem real?”

“We’ve been caught up in some very unusual situations Mac. I wouldn’t have wanted to share those experiences with anyone but you. Now go ahead and sleep for a couple of hours. Wake me if you need anything.”

Harm roused Mac and tended to the fire every two hours. He didn’t sleep as he held Mac close, thinking about all that could have happened and what it would be like if Mac never remembered everything. It was too devastating to think about. He would cease to be the man he had become trying to be better, be stronger, be more honorable, be more lovable just so Mac might take a chance on him. Mac stirred in her sleep snuggling closer to him.

It was torture and plesure alike as she slept relaxed in his arms, allowing him to hold her and care for her. It wasn’t that he wanted Mac weak. He wanted Mac close. He wanted Mac to be there for him, the way he was there for her now, if he should ever need her like that again...like he had when he had given up the Navy to go find her and bring her home when no one else would do it.
He had been lucky to get a second chance at the Navy, but he would give it up for good if it meant Mac would welcome him into her life and her heart. He wanted her to consider him as her life partner. Somewhere around dawn, Harm fell asleep from exhaustion. The snow still fell outside the cabin.

0830 EST
Shelter on the Long Trail

Mac had been awake for over an hour. At first she woke up feeling almost claustrophobic until she realized that it was Harm’s arms that held her. She relaxed then, listened to his heart beat under her ear in the chest where she rested her head.

Her head was sore to the touch, but the ache was gone. During the night she had relived her life in dreams and nightmares. Each time one had roused her from sleep, Harm had been there to soothe and comfort her until she relaxed and drifted off once again.

Harmon Rabb Junior, also known as Commander Rabb, Stick-boy, Fly-boy, and many less flattering nicknames at times held her close. Sarah “Mac” Mackenzie knew first in her heart that this man was the one she loved. She also knew that even though he hadn’t said the words, he loved her with the same conviction.

Resting her chin on her hands which were folded on his chest, she waited for him to wake up so she could tell him what she knew. She rubbed her foot up and down his leg, enjoying the play of his muscles and the reaction his body had to her touch, even if he didn’t realize it yet. Or maybe he did.

Mac saw him grin and stir just a bit, so she increased her attentions to him. Slowly he opened his eyes.

“Please tell me you got your memory back and you know what you’re doing,” Harm pleaded with a voice husky with arousal.

“I did and I do. I understand why we hit twelve on the complications scale, Harm.”

“Tell me Mac.”

“We love each other and neither of us would say it.”

“Are you saying it now?” Harm asked as held her tighter against his length.

“I am...I love you Harm and I know you love me.” Mac suddenly felt more at home then she ever had.

“You’re right Mac. I do love you. So what are we going to do about it?” Harm asked looking into the dark brown depths of Mac’s eyes.

“Actions speak louder then words Harm...and judging by the snow outside, we won’t be interrupted for some time.”

With that, Harm took action. It may have been a long and winding path to get where they were now, but a slip on the Long Trail due to autumn leaves and an early snow knocked the sense into both of them. With the complications behind them, they looked forward to a future together where ever it might take them.

Until next time....

I only have one question? It say 21,000 words, but it's only about 1/4 of that. Does that mean there's more?
