Subject: Round Trip Ticket

Title: Round Trip Ticket

Prompt: From the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice, submitted by Ann

Elisabeth Bennet: I thought you were in London.
Mr. Darcy: No... No, I'm not.

Word count: 763

Category: romance

Rating: PG (slight innuendo)

Disclaimer: I don't own the characters, I'm just borrowing them. Since DPB doesn't seem to want them anymore, I figure he won't care if I let them out to play a little.

Summary: After the coin toss, Gen. Cresswell stepped in and reminded Harm and Mac there was a war on, and officers couldn't just up and quit. So they married quickly and headed off to their respective posts; with Mac putting in for a transfer to somewhere on the same continent as Harm. It's been about 9 months of e-mails, phone calls, and exchanging visits, using up a lot of their accrued leave.

United Airlines Flight 229 - non-stop Dulles to San Diego

Captain Harmon Rabb, Jr. USN, stretched his legs and tried to get comfortable in the impossibly cramped space of the seat on the 757 that was taking him from Washington, D.C. to San Diego. If only he'd been able to score a military flight... But no one seemed to need a Hornet ferried across the country, so he was wedged into the middle seat in the second to last row - between a twenty-something girl who didn't seem to be capable of maintaining more than five seconds of silence and a grandmotherly sort who chattered non-stop about her incredibly precocious grandchildren. When she brought out the second photo album he resigned himself to a very long five hours with no opportunity to sleep. Sleep he needed badly, since he'd arrived in DC the night before for a late meeting with General Cresswell, followed by a five-thirty wake up call to get to Dulles on time. Harm sighed heavily; he was getting too old for this sort of trip.

JAG - San Diego

Harm stepped into the Joint Command JAG office in his home town - the office currently managed by his wife, Marine Lt. Colonel Sarah Mackenzie. He nodded appreciatively at the quiet buzz in the bullpen. His jarhead definitely ran a tight ship.

Petty Officer Coates looked up from her desk at that moment. Spotting the captain, she reached for the phone, ready to buzz the colonel's office.

Harm motioned to her to stop. "Can I interrupt the colonel?"

"Yes, sir." Coates smiled broadly. "Just go right in, sir."

"Hang on to this for me, okay?" He handed her a manila envelope. Harm opened the door silently and stepped into the office. "Hi, beautiful."

Startled, Mac stammered, "I thought you were in London."

"No... No, I'm not." He closed the door behind him. "I seem to be in San Diego."

Mac came around her desk and stepped into his arms. "So why are you in San Diego instead of London? And why didn't you tell me you were coming?"

Harm dropped a kiss on her nose. "I'm in San Diego because I have a surprise for you."

"Oh?" Mac stepped back to see his expression.

Harm reached for the intercom button on Mac's desk. "Coates, will you bring that envelope in please?"

He grinned at the look on Mac's face. "You'll have to wait, Marine."

A knock on the door heralded Coates's entry. "Here you are, Sir, Ma'am." She snapped to attention.

"Thank you, Coates. That will be all." Mac dismissed her yeoman.

Harm grinned at his wife. "So -- do you want to know what I've got?"

"I'm sure you'll tell me when you're ready." She leaned against the edge of her desk. "In the meantime, I actually have work to do. So either let me know or let me get back to work."

He handed her the envelope. "Take a look."

Mac slid a finger beneath the flap of the envelope and pulled out an official document. "No way!" She stared at the paper. "You're sure this isn't a joke?"

"Yes. I'm sure." His grin lit up his face. "General Cresswell didn't make me fly all the way to headquarters for a joke."

"Section chief in London?" Mac shook her head. "How? I can't report to you. We're married."

Harm chuckled. "I noticed. You won't report to me; you'll report directly to him. The people under you, however, are in my command." He shook his head. "Don't even try to figure out how he came up with this. All I know is that the SecNav had something to do with it."

Mac turned a page. "Thirty days to report?"

"Yep. You have thirty days to turn things over to your replacement and report to London." He grinned again. "I think I can help you find quarters."

She smacked his arm. "Cute." She paused to think. "So how long are you here?"

"Just long enough to see Frank and my mother, take everyone out to dinner, and make love to my wife."

"Which means?"

"I have a flight out tomorrow at 1:15."

"Ouch."

"Exactly. So what do you say you take the rest of the afternoon off? We can call my folks, have a nap, and whatever else comes up."

She giggled. "Especially whatever else." Mac nodded. "Give me ten minutes, okay?"

"As long as it takes, Mac. Just don't take more than fifteen. I really need that nap."

"And then what?"

"Whatever else."

The End.

[> I agree with rosie and rivited - nice epilogue, good use of the challenge lines however, they were too easy - I think you need to go back and pick another challenge. -- Emma's Nana, 20:52:21 03/31/09 Tue [1]

...but not so much in its length. That however, is only because you wrote what you did write so well that I (and I think Emma's Nana too, among others) are left thirsting for more. Less than a thousand words, yet containing the small details and subtlety that allowed me to see it all unfold.

Come to think of it, your summary contained an entire story ;)
