"Ever since we’ve been here you’ve been so confident.”

“Well I’m the captain. That’s my job. It’s no good for me to go waving my arms in the air and screaming “Oh shit, we’re gonna die!” “That doesn’t invoke much confidence, does it?”

Somewhere in the Wilderness

Mac’s POV

This was supposed to be a nice secret getaway. We were supposed to be having a fun, romantic time. Instead, here I am trying to find somewhere to bed down for the night where we won’t get attacked by wild animals. THIS IS NOT FUN!

Harm’s POV

I can’t believe I got us into this, AGAIN! I should just know better than to even think about trying to organise a romantic getaway, something always goes wrong.

“Harm, what do you think? Does this cave look deserted?” Mac yelled down to him as he looked over the plane.

“I can’t hear any signs of life,” he said, and then added sarcastically, “But with my luck, you never know.”

“C’mon,” said Mac playfully punching him in the arm as she passed, “let’s go and get some dry fall to make a fire with.”

“Person with the least amount of wood gets to find dinner.” She said with a laugh as she scampered away.

Harm wandered off to look for some firewood knowing that he would be the one getting dinner, so he might as well look for that while he was at it. Just how he was supposed to feed Mac anything substantial was beyond him. He did have the picnic basket in the Steerman, but that wasn’t going to be substantial enough to keep them going overnight, after all it was a light lunch in the hope that when he surprised Mac, she would lose some of her appetite. Now there was no way that was going to happen.

After collecting wood for half an hour, Harm headed back to the cave. He had managed to pick up some, what he hoped was edible, foliage (well, it would be for him, he wasn’t so sure about Mac the carnivore). As he came within earshot of the camp he heard voices.

“Are you alright, ma’am?” Came a low rumbling male voice.

“I’m fine, thanks. My partner is getting some wood and will be back shortly.” Said Mac, her voice sounding slightly higher pitched than normal to Harm’s ears.

“Are you sure? I could help to keep you warm. You know, it could be dangerous out here.” Said the male voice with the hint of what Harm thought was a threat.

Mac’s face grew red as she tried to keep herself calm. Just as she was about to retort, there was the sound of branches breaking as Harm came crashing through the trees.

“Hi honey, I’m home.” Said Harm in a cheerful voice. One look at him told Mac that he had heard as least part of what had been going on. Although he was smiling, it was a tight smile that didn’t reach his eyes. His whole body radiated conserved energy, as if he was ready to pounce at any moment.

“Mac,” Harm said. “I managed to find some wood, and something that will pass as food if we add it to what we already have.”

Harm turned slightly as he introduced himself to the stranger. Putting his hand out in greeting he said in a tight voice. “Harmon Rabb.”

“Will.” Said the man returning the handshake. “I was just telling your lady friend that it could be dangerous to be out here overnight. There have been some odd things happening here recently. Animals disappearing, couple o’ rangers going missing.”

“Poachers?” asked Harm.

“Always a possibility.” Said Will shrugging his shoulders.

“I’m sure we’ll be fine.” Said Harm calmly “You out here by yourself?”

“Just doing a little target practice. Like to keep my skills current.” Replied Will looking between the two people in front of him.

Harm moved to stand next to Mac, and putting his arm around her shoulders said. “Don’t let us keep you. I’m sure you have things to do.”

“Be careful.” Said Will as he started making his way back into the woods.

Mac looked at Harm. “Déjà vu?” she said with a small smile.

“Sure was.” Grinned Harm giving her a hug. “Now how about that fire and then we can have some food?”

“Harm? You weren’t really worried, were you?” asked Mac, turning to look at him.

“Of course not.” Said Harm making sure that Mac couldn’t see his face.

Mac got the fire started, while Harm walked to the bottom of the little hill and got the picnic basket out of the Steerman. While he was there, he went over the plane again, but still couldn’t find any reason for them having to make a forced landing.

Between the light food that they had in here, and what he had found while he was collecting firewood, they managed to have a relatively good meal, complimented with a glass of sparkling grape juice. Sitting n front of the fire afterward, they looked like what they were, a newlywed couple on a romantic getaway.

As they sat in companionable silence, taking in the fresh air and just enjoying each other’s company. They both looked reflectively at the fire. At that moment, they both turned their heads, startled by what sounded like a gunshot.

‘Great’, thought Harm. ‘That’s it, Next time we go flying, I don’t care how long we’re supposed to be gone, I’m bringing a weapon.’

He glanced across at Mac, which confirmed his suspicions. She thought it was a gunshot too.

As if they knew instinctively how the other would work, Mac started to kick dirt over the fire as Harm went and checked the perimeter of their little camp. They both knew that if it was the man, Will they had met earlier there was little point in trying to cover their existence, but, both thought if he came back and thought that they had moved on they would stand a chance of not being shot at. If previous experience was anything to go by, they probably wouldn’t be that lucky.

Harm grabbed Mac’s arm and moved her towards the trees. When he had come back from gathering wood and had heard voices he had thought to find somewhere that they could hide if needed.

As Harm pushed Mac down into the hollow that he had discovered earlier he whispered to her “I thought this would be a little more romantic.”

Mac whispered back, “Well, we had firelight, moonlight and no one around for miles. Two out of three isn’t bad anyway.”

“Shh.” Said Harm as he heard noises coming towards them.

As they watched two men walked into their makeshift camp. Neither of them were the man that they had met earlier. This did nothing to improve their moods as both the men were heavily armed. If they were out hunting, you would hope that there were wild elephants around; both Harm and Mac knew that they were in trouble if they were seen.

The men were talking quietly to each other as they hastily looked around the camp.

“They can’t be far away from here, these ashes are still warm.” Said the first one.

“Maybe they were in that bird that we saw earlier,” replied the second, “they could be just some young couple out for a quiet weekend.”

Mac let out a small sneeze and both men turned to look in the direction of the noise. Neither could see anything, but both stayed alert while they searched the camp. Meanwhile Harm was practically lying over the top of Mac to make sure that if anyone was seen it would be him, not her.

Harm gently took hold of Mac’s chin and turned her head towards him. Placing his finger over his lips, he indicated for her to be quiet. Seeing Mac’s nod, Harm pushed himself backwards quietly and made his way around to the other side of the camp, listening to the conversation of the two men on the way.

“Do you think maybe it could be Will’s camp?” Came the first voice.

“Nah, Will might be a ranger, but he’s not this sloppy.” Said the second.

“Maybe we should make sure he gets lost as well. We’re onto a good thing here, I wouldn’t want anything to get in the way.” Said the man Harm had named the insecure one.

“No!” Said the man Harm had named the Boss. “We ran too many risks with the last ranger. Will is still a couple of steps behind us. As long as he stays that way, we’ll leave him be.”

Harm wasn’t sure what Will was two steps behind in, but he was sure that he needed to find a way to get Mac out of there. The last thing he wanted was for her to be shot – again. He had to get these guys away from Mac. Harm hoped that he could pull this off. He started to grab some branches, swaying and making lots of noise as he came into the campsite. The two men both raised their weapons.

“Hello, what are you guys doing here?” said Harm slurring his words slightly

“You haven’t been stood up to have you?” he asked, swaying slightly with a silly grin crossing his features.

”Is this your camp?’ asked Boss

“Yep, was supposed to have myself a little fun this weekend, but couldn’t find the right woman.” Harm swayed closer to Boss as he spoke.

Boss eyed the man before him carefully. He might be just some souped up city boy, but that didn’t mean that he couldn’t be dangerous. While Boss and his friend were concentrating on Harm, they didn’t even hear Mac enter the campsite.

While Mac went left toward Mr Insecure, Harm seemingly tripped over his own feet straight into boss. Mac managed to disarm her man, but Harm was involved in a struggle with his. As they pushed and pulled a gunshot echoed into the night making everyone freeze.

“Ahh, that smarts.” Said Boss grabbing hold of his shoulder where Will had pierced it with a round from his rifle.

“Nice to see you.” Said Harm as he looked up at the other man with a grin. “Didn’t hear you arrive.”

“That would be because of the amount of noise you were making. If there was any wildlife here worth poaching, you’ve scared it off for days.” Said Will returning the grin and throwing Harm a pair of plastic cuffs. “Much appreciated.” He said as he indicated toward the man lying on the ground. Mac had already disarmed her man and he was sitting docilely a few feet away.

As Harm gave his information to Will, backup turned up to take the two men away.

“I did warn you it could be dangerous out here,” said Will.

“Yes, you did,” said Harm, “Next time I think I’ll just book into a hotel.”

“Might be safer,” said Mac as she joined the men, “not very exciting though. Besides, it’s been a long time since the last time we did this.”

“You catch poachers often, then?” asked Will with a smile.

“Once or twice.” Replied Harm smiling as well.

“Thank you for your help. I’ll be in touch about testifying.” Said Will as he left them.

Harm put his arm around Mac as they headed toward their makeshift bed for the night. They had decided that they would like to stay out for the night anyway. Even though they hadn’t planned it, Will had been helpful and managed to find them a couple of spare sleeping bags, so now they were able to keep comfortable and warm.

As they lay there looking up at the stars Mac rolled towards Harm, tilting her head to look in his eyes. “Ever since we’ve been here you’ve been so confident.” She said as she continued to look at him.

Feeling the need to lighten the mood Harm replied, “Well I’m a captain. That’s my job. It’s no good for me to go waving my arms in the air and screaming “Oh shit, we’re gonna die!” “That doesn’t invoke much confidence, does it?”

Mac looked at Harm’s smile and knew that however serious she wanted this conversation to be, he wasn’t going to let it happen. So instead she moved herself even closer and running her fingers up and down his chest while looking up at him through her lashes she asked, “About that surprise?”

Harm let out a laugh and rolled over so that his body covered hers. “We might have to negotiate about the surprise.” He said leaning down to kiss her.

“What kind of negotiations?” asked Mac snaking her arms around Harm’s neck.

As Harm kissed his way down her neck he whispered, “let’s try to find out, shall we?”
