Summary: It’s complicated... but simple.

********************

“Oh good,” she took a cleansing breath, “you’re here.”

Harm’s head showed from behind Sarah. “Mac?” He walked around his beloved Stearman, wiping his hands on a piece of cloth. “What are you doing here?”

“I came by your apartment and you weren’t there, so I figured since it’s such a beautiful day, you’d probably be here.” Funny, it sounded perfectly reasonable inside her head.

Harm took out his cell phone from his pant pocket and checked for missed calls. Finding none, he waggled the device between thumb and forefinger for her to see. “You came all the way out here on a hunch?” He grinned at her, actually very happy to see her. Maybe he could convince her to go up for a spin. His grin faded when he took in the blank expression on her face, and came to the only logical conclusion, given the fact that she just drove to find him without engaging her formidable mind beforehand.

“Mac, what’s wrong? Is everything okay?” He moved closer to her.

“Yes...” She stole a glance up at him, faltered, “Er... no...”

“Which is it?”

She could smell him and it wasn’t helping her thinking process any. “It’s complicated.”

Harm snorted. “Where have I heard that before?”

Mac wasn’t laughing. She shook her head and momentarily placed a hand over her eyes. Now that she was here and he was listening, the words wouldn’t come out. She had driven out here on a whim. Going to his apartment hadn’t been thought out much either; she just wanted to talk to him, but it was a much shorter drive. The drive to the airfield was a long one, with only the radio and her thoughts to keep her company. Neither did a very good job.

It was a perfect day. The sky was bright blue, only a few flimsy clouds trailing through it, and the sun was shining down on the earth. It was a day from the story books. Sadly enough, it felt like she was driving under gray cloudy skies, with rain, fog and a side of hail. During the drive she went through every possible thing she could say to him, pleas, declarations and demands were brought up and shot down, and on she drove.

Harm’s warm hand on her arm brought her out of her reverie, with the first thing that jumped out of her mouth.

“I haven’t been sleeping much lately.” She looked up at him, willing the rest of the conversation to unfold without her help. “Just when I thought it was getting simple, my world got a whole lot more complicated...” Images of Webb, of medical corridors and of a porch outside the Admiral’s dinning-out were spinning around her head.

Slightly calmer now, Harm guided her to a bench nearby and they sat down. “Well, you’re in luck, I’ve recently decided my life is too simple, I wanna complicate the hell out of it.”

Harm smiled as Mac finally let out an incredulous laugh. “Your life is too simple? That’ll be the day...”

“What? The way I see it, my life can be very simple. Yours too, actually.” He seemed very sure of himself. Despite everything, Mac was drawn in to the familiar banter and the warmth of his voice.

“Oh really?” He nodded eagerly. “How exactly?”

“Well, the way I see it, if you love me the way I love you, it’s all quite simple from there on.” He waited for her to realize what he’d just said, and wasn’t disappointed seconds later, when the shock showed through.

“If I...?”

He raised a brow at her and then slowly but surely closed the distance and brought his lips to hers. Mac was frozen in place, just letting him kiss her softly and sweetly as he was. She did not see this coming. Just when she finally started kissing him back, Harm pulled away. She couldn’t help the whimper that escaped her.

Opening her eyes she found him there, with just a few inches separating them.

“Wow. It’s been a while since I gambled like that...” His smile was different now – all warmth and affection; chocolaty sweet.

This time they met halfway and there was not an iota of hesitation between the two of them. Her hands found their way to the back of his head, as he pulled her to him and held on tight. Her heart was so full it overflowed.

“See? Simple.” He kissed her quickly once more.

Mac didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She settled for a little of both, and drew him to her for a much needed hug.

“I love you, Harm.” She whispered in his ear.

She didn’t know where he found the courage inside him to just say the words without flinching, speaking in code, or acting out in a way she was supposed to cosmically understand, but she wasn’t about to question her luck. This time his actions and his words spoke in the same decibel level, were very clear and did not contradict. It was a miracle, and you can’t question those.

He hugged her tighter in response. “Mac, you have no idea...” She just smiled into his neck.

Pulling back to look at her face, Harm was glad to see a true MacKenzie smile adorning it. “So, how about taking her up for a simple spin?” He mentioned with his head towards Sarah.

“Simple?” Mac raised a brow. Harm nodded enthusiastically.

They spoke simultaneously, Mac’s tone threatening, Harm’s promising. A pact was made.

“No poachers!”

~-~

End.
