Kate Shindle, whose Broadway credits include Legally Blonde, Cabaret and Jekyll & Hyde, will run the 2009 ING New York City Marathon Nov. 1 to help raise money for their marriage equality initiatives.
The former Miss America has been a crusader for several organizations. In fact, during her Miss America reign in the late 90s, she pushed for HIV/AIDS education and prevention. In the process, she became nationally known as an aggressive and accomplished voice in the AIDS movement.
About her current efforts, Shindle said in a statement, “It is clear that the marriage equality movement is the civil rights battle of my generation. Civil unions won’t cut it; there are over 1,000 rights afforded by legal marriage that civil unions do not provide. Unfortunately, fearmongering and bigotry have convinced many Americans that their faith is somehow threatened by allowing same-sex couples access to this institution. This is simply not true. Americans of all persuasions—including straight, Christian, Republican—must come together in recognition of the fact that same-sex marriage rights do not pose a single threat to heterosexual marriages. We must reject the use of God and religion to spread fear, hatred, and discrimination.”
Shindle, who has run one previous marathon, told Playbill.com, “Last weekend, I did a 20-mile training run and could barely walk to the subway after it was over. But what keeps me going is the opportunity to make the statement that fringe lunatics and uneducated so-called activists (I’m looking at you, Carrie Prejean) do not define this issue. It is an effort that all Americans have to care about, regardless of their political or sexual orientation. ‘Separate but equal’ does not work. Still. So I will run and run and run, not just to raise badly-needed funds for the cause, but to disseminate the message that we all need to pay attention to this and demand that our legislators do the same.”
Gavin Creel, the Hair star who is also a co-founder of Broadway Impact — a community of actors, directors, stage managers, fans and producers “united by the simple belief that anyone who wants to should be able to get married” — had this to say about Shindle’s upcoming run: “As a grassroots coalition of the theatre community and its fans mobilizing in support of marriage equality, BroadwayImpact is always looking for interesting ways to get our message out there. So when one of our own, the super-talented Kate Shindle, thought of this exciting opportunity to educate and inspire people about the importance of achieving equal rights for all people in this country, while simultaneously running a whole lotta miles, we said, THANK YOU and GO DIVA!”

- Kate Shindle totally rocks my world! I know that many purists will say that she was an "interview queen" as Miss America, and while I agree that she may not be as classically pretty as other Miss As, wow what a role model she is! Sooo well spoken and intelligent -- in addition to be amazingly talented! And she has grown into one of the most amazing advocates for marriage equality issues. Please click in for a fabulous interview she gave in June on the red carpet for the Tony Awards. She addresses the Carrie Prejean issue head on. And while she does it respectfully, she does get a classic dig in about "two hams stapled to her chest" that is CLASSIC! Please watch. LOVE YOU KATE! -- Hoosier Girl, 14:29:39 10/03/09 Sat
- Who cares what K.S. thinks? (NT) -- MS or NC should have won., 22:04:31 10/03/09 Sat
- Kate, come back when you get a chance! We miss you in Pageant Chat! (NT) -- New York Guy (well, when we can access it...which is usually), 22:15:35 10/03/09 Sat
- I love her!!!! (NT) -- John - Lives in WA, 00:53:54 10/04/09 Sun
- I went to college with Kate and worked on the run crew of a show with her. We became casual friends through that show, and she is just a super-cool lady. She is extremely smart, funny, and informed; however, I think my favorite quality of hers is that she is so comfortable and confident in her own skin. She is who she is. She is direct and honest, and she was all for marriage equality before she won Miss Illinois. I'm not surprised in the slightest bit to see her speak out so brilliantly! - I just became a fan of Kate's! (NT) -- Florida Fan, 07:57:42 10/04/09 Sun
- I was there at Miss America when Kate won as part of the NC contingency. While we were very heartsick that Michelle did not win, she was very satisfied. It took me a long time to appreciate Kate, but this has sealed the deal for me. Thanks Kate!!!!! (NT) -- NC Pageant Fan, 08:09:27 10/04/09 Sun
- Click in for yet another video of Kate Shindle delivering what has to be called a brilliant political speech at an anti-Prop 8 rally in NYC last fall. I just don't have enough superlatives for this woman. And every time I see her and hear her, it reminds me of why I fell in love with MAO in the first place. -- Hoosier Girl, 09:18:00 10/04/09 Sun
- I love seeing former Miss Americas (and Miss USAs) doing exactly what they talked about before they ever won the crown. She always said she wanted to be a broadway performer and she made that dream come true. How refreshing to see that this young woman has stayed true to who she is and is obviously so comfortable in her own skin. While she's not my favorite Miss America, she just might be my favorite former Miss America. (NT) -- KShasbeenQueen, 11:32:37 10/04/09 Sun
- Not all Republicans are against gay marriage and not all Democrats support it. (NT) -- Fannie Pack, 11:58:07 10/04/09 Sun
- Thank you for making this point Fannie! People cannot be defined by one word like Republican, Democrat, Conservative, Liberal etc. (NT) -- webby - the PacNW gal!, 12:35:07 10/04/09 Sun
- I am usually defined by one word. But we normally don't allow it on this board. (NT) -- Meemaw, 14:18:44 10/04/09 Sun
- I know several republicans who are for marriage equality and several dems against it. You're right; however, it seems to me that the republican platform is generally anti gay anything and that "they" generalize a WHOLE LOT about the gay community, so turnabout is definitely fair play here. (NT) -- Pageant Pauley, 12:18:46 10/07/09 Wed
- As a Republican, I kind of take offense to this comment. First of all, just because someone is not for gay marriage does not mean they are anti-gay. As a former titleholder, I have had many homosexual friends and several of them were not in favor of homosexual marriage themselves. Also, I don't think that the Republican platform focuses on homosexual marriage. The Republican platform is about strong national security, limited government and free market economy. Although I am personally not an advocate for same-sex marriage, I am a Republican because I am an advocate for National Security, Capitalism and Limited Government. (NT) -- Former MAO Miss State, 13:05:58 10/07/09 Wed
- You had me in your corner until you mentioned capitalism, which implies that those not Republican are for socialism and or communism. National Defense, Limited Government and a free-market economy are basic tenants of the Republican Party but do not encompass the entire platform, which among others, does not believe Gays should be a protected class in terms of discrimination in housing, labor laws and the work place. 34 states now have laws on the books that make it legal to fire someone simply because they are gay. While the Democratic Party shows lip service, they are hardly the grand champions of the gay community since it was a Democrat that signed into law the Defense of Marriage Act and instituted the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Policy….. (NT) -- GMAN, 14:38:41 10/07/09 Wed
- While I hate labels (and am frutrated with the party's current trajectory), I confess that most of my life, I've considered myself a Republican, for many of the same reasons that Former MAO Miss State enumerates above. But here's what confuses me: if you're for limited government, then why are you for any policy or practice that legislates any individual's or group's personal life, liberty and pursuit of happiness? This is exactly how I feel about states passing laws that somehow prohibit same-sex marriage. And Former Miss - if you are opposed to same-sex marriage, then, IMHO, you are in favor of the government getting involved in peoples' lives and, therefore, bigger government. May be overly simple (as I am), but that's how I see it. (NT) -- Hoosier Girl, 15:24:33 10/07/09 Wed

- Really former MAO MIss State? Well I take offense that you think that you should have a right as an American that I shouldnt be allowed to have also as an American. (NT) -- Andres, 18:52:49 10/07/09 Wed
- like to think that Americans have grown in their wisdom in 12 years. Bill Clinton has even come around saying he is in favor of same sex marriage. It is easy- once you understand that it will not hurt you- why not? We are a country of personal freedoms and rights....and how can a gay person NOT be in favor of this basic right? Forgive me...I am sure you have lots of gay friends- but they are not being honest with you. By the way- I am NOT gay- but I believe in live and let live. I am more Democrat than Republican these days- but I vote the person and not the party. (I think they are both pretty much full of shit.) I am in favor of a strong work ethic, lower taxes (no taxes for the elderly), a co-pay system of medical care for unnecessary BS that clogs our ERs and the public option. I HAVE lived in countries that have socialized medicine and thought it was WONDERFUL. (First HAND experience here!!!) -- XXXXXXX, 15:24:09 10/07/09 Wed
- What about the Americas that travel abroad for their health care (Farrah) and there are just as many in Euopre that do not travel outside of their system. There is a shortage of physicians in Europe because they come here if they can to earn the major big bucks. Click in -- XXXXXXX, 12:23:55 10/08/09 Thu
- For the most part this has been a very civil discussion, but one poster, Dee Dee, was intent on being disrespectful toward another poster and we had to ban her. Disagreements are always welcome but please remember our number one rule on this board is to keep it civil, and it is a rule we take very seriously. (NT) -- Modsquad, 21:13:52 10/08/09 Thu
- I did not see her post- but if it was me she was being disrepectful toward, please don't ban her. People get passionate about this very costly issues. My skin is WAAAAAY to thick to let it bother me. Of course- I don't know her but live and let live. (NT) -- XXXXXXX, 07:34:11 10/09/09 Fri
